  11. Mauna Kea Observatories Communication Network • MKOCN is largely a cooperative network • Staffing is funded by the observatories • Core routers and switches are managed by MKOCN staff. The observatories’ routers are managed by the observatories’ staff • The MKOCN Working Group meets quarterly to discuss and make decisions through consensus on all issues of the MKOCN • The Working Group consists of one representative from each observatory • The MKOCN is coordinated by the Institute for Astronomy of the University of Hawaii • Facilities are owned, leased or otherwise as practicable and advantageous

Asia - America Gateway 1 June 2006, HONG KONG – A consortium of major international telecommunications entities today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to plan and develop a proposal to build an international undersea cable system linking South East Asia with the United States of America (USA). These entities, all experienced telecommunication entities with a ready customer base in their respective domestic markets, include AiTi of Brunei Darussalam, CAT Telecom (Thailand), PLDT (Philippines), REACH (Hong Kong), StarHub (Singapore), Telekom Malaysia (Malaysia) and VNPT (Vietnam). The proposed undersea cable system will be called the Asia – America Gateway and it will route between Malaysia and the USA via Hong Kong, the Philippines, Guam and Hawaii, with branches into Singapore, Thailand, Brunei Darussalam and Vietnam.
