3. School ChoicePlacement Center Contact No:651-632-3760 Central is the Community School for Area F1 Central is the District wide magnet for the French Immersion program (Areas A-F). Central is the Regional IB magnet for Area C (West of 35E) & Area E Busing will be provided to schools within the student’s Attendance Area as well as to Regional and District Magnets. Any student who lives outside the attendance areas may apply to Central. Admitted students will be expected to provide their own means of transportation.

Students who must submitan application to attend Central High and receive transportation from the district Placement Center Application Deadline: February 15, 2014 • Students attending Capitol Hill Middle School who reside within Area F1- Please submit an on time application by February 15th • Students who live in Area E and Area C (West of 35E) who want to attend Central for the IB Program

5. Understanding Title One at CHS • Purpose: To ensure that ALL students have a fair, equitable and significant opportunity for high quality education • To support ALL students in meeting or exceeding proficiency standards on State and other academic assessments

7. Quest Courses(Weighted, no external exams) Advanced Placement Courses (AP-weighted, External exams worthy of college credit) International Baccalaureate Diploma program (IB DP- weighted, external exams worthy of college credit) International Baccalaureate Middle Years program (IB MYP- weighted in core subjects and World Languages) College in the schools (CIS- U of M credit, weighted, no external exams, classes held at Central) Post Secondary Educational Opportunities (PSEO- Classes taken at a post secondary institution worthy of school and college credit) Advanced Programs/Course Options (Most students at Central choose a mix of courses, exams, pathways to suit their academic and career goals)

8. Quest Courses • Quest is humanities focused, rigorous, discussion-based • Quest is grades 9/10; prepares for IB & AP in gr. 11/12 Weighted honors points • Quest courses in grades 9 and 10 are also MYP courses • Quest courses do not have an external exam in place at the end of the course

9. International Baccalaureate (IB) At Central TWO Programs • IB Diploma Program (IB DP-Grades 11 and 12) • IB Middle Years Program(IB MYP- Grades 9 and 10)

10. IB DP Options • The Full IB Diploma option (Requirements: take a minimum of 6 IB exams, complete a course called TOK, fulfill Creative, Action and Service requirements, complete a research paper) • The IB Course Results option: Take IB exams in individual subjects

11. IB MYP OPTIONS There are two levels of participation in the IB MYP: • Students may choose to be FULL MYP certificate candidates(See handout) • Students may choose to receive the MYP Course Results in individual subjects (See handout) Please Note: The MYP is NOT a pre requirement for participation in the IB Diploma program

12. Advanced Placement (AP) • Offered by The College Board • Courses follow a standardized national curriculum • Students successful on AP exams may receive college credits • Central Students have 19 AP Test options (see handout)

13. College in the Schools (CIS) • Central teachers lead a U of M-approved curriculum for gr. 11/12 • Students are enrolled as U of M students • Students receive U of M credits

14. PSEO- Post Secondary Educational opportunities • Students take college level courses while at High School (Eligibility requirements apply) • Taught on the college campus • Taught by College faculty • Students earn College and High school credit on successful completion of the course

17. Who Can Take Challenging Courses? • There is no screening process for participation in IB/AP & Quest classes/programs- students self select • Eligibility requirements apply for participation in CIS and PSEO • Success depends to a large measure on effort and motivation • Some course recommendations may be suggested based on a student’s previous course/s.
