  2. Partner Practice Identify a colleague who can be your partner for any assigned partnering tasks. Decide who will be partner #1 and partner #2 Observe the 4 L's of working with a partner. Look (Make eye contact) Lean (Turn toward your partner) Low voice (Use your private vs. public voice) Listen (Practice authentic listening)

  4. Think-Write-Pair- Share (Partner Practice) Use the sentence starter below to reflect on your understanding of precision partnering. Starter 1: One important component of precision partnering is ________ (noun or verb phrase) because __________ (reason). Example: One important component of precision partnering is preselecting the partners because students don’t waste time wondering who their partners are. Challenge starter: Another important component of precision partnering is ___ because _____________.

  5. Partner Practice Partnering Directions Partner #1 shares first using the sentence starter. Partner #2 shares next using the sentence starter. Listening task : Be ready to share your partner’s idea with the large group. Keep sharing until I say: "Bring your conversations to a close, please." If you don't have a second idea, share your partner's idea using the sentence starter.

  7. Rationale for Precision Partnering • It provides think time which improves the quality of student responses. • Engagement increases as all student are active in the learning. • Students use the academic vocabulary of the discipline. • Students rehearse what they will later contribute.

Rationale for Precision Partnering • Talking over ideas helps students connect them to their own prior knowledge. • Breaking up content with thinking time helps students retain critical information. • Students develop writing, speaking and listening skills. • Classroom community builds through the sharing of ideas.

Provide a sentence starter that is visible to students. • Give students the parts of speech or other information they will need to complete the starter. • Make sure that the starter contains critical content that has more than one correct response.

Implementation Basics • Model a response for students (verbally and in writing). • Use the sentence starter to help students hear and see what they need to do to be successful. • A struggling student can use the teacher’s model if necessary. • Designate who speaks first between the partners. • Eliminates confusion and “down time.”

  12. Implementation Basics • Check for student understanding using the sentence starters with the whole group. • Preselect two or more students to “jump-start” the discussion. • Randomly call on students to share And • Call on volunteers.
