Upstate Medical University and Onondaga County Medical Society Areas of Connection and Cooperation • Upstate Faculty Membership Involvement—Leaders, Faculty, Alumnae • Executive Council Representatives for members, medical student section, residents • Medical students chapter activities and programming, plus the Annual Medical Student Physician Reception • OCMS supports the White Coat Ceremony by seeking member donations • Legal Grand Rounds programs conducted for residents • OCMS has scholarships for medical students who reside in Onondaga County. LOCAL VICTORIES & Achievements • Working in League with the Onondaga County Health Department and other hospital, OCMS is increasing its role in battling the addiction and opioid issues affecting our community. OCMS co-sponsored an opioid training program for physicians and allowed health providers in cooperation with all three Syracuse hospitals. • Expanded Communication with State & Federal Elected Representatives At the Annual Legislative Breakfast and Roundtable discussion and in one-on-one conversations, members get to speak with area state and federal legislators directly so they better understand concerns of physician constituents. • Locally conducted awareness and preventative programs addressing physician stress and burnout as well as offering a free 6-part series (with CME) on wellness strategies. • OCMS continues to offer valuable information to member practices through the Annual Ask the Carriers conference ,and Health Education information to the public by facilitating the Medical Society booth at the NYS fair. • OCMS provides a free for members an office translation placard in cooperation with MAMI services.   6. STATE LEVEL VICTORIES • Providing a free-for-members mandatory, state-approved course on addiction, opioids & palliative care. A no-cost option valued at $150. • Step Therapy Bill signed into law by Gov. Cuomo. This measure keeps treatment and prescription directives under the control of physicians, not insurance companies. • Eligibility for Excess Coverage Preserved -continued coverage to over 13,000 physicians statewide, mostly practicing in Upstate. • Important improvements and additions to Doctors Across New York Program - This program encourages physicians completing their residency training to commit to practice in underserved areas through such incentives as loan repayment. • Additional funding ($35M) to combat heroin and opioid epidemic. • E-Prescribing Exception for Low Volume Prescribers approved • Retail Clinic proposals- ongoingefforts stopped to curb the establishment of ‘limited service’ clinics in retail stores owned by publicly traded corporations.
