  2. Memoirs • What is a memoir? • Typically, a memoir is a book with ONE overall story and a beginning, middle, and end. • However, these are not that type of memoir

  3. The Story of Six This guy • The idea of telling an entire story in six words dates back to Ernest Hemingway. • Hemingway is known for his minimalist writing style and economic use of language. • From Old Man and the Sea: “He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish.” • Hemingway was challenged to write a whole novel in just six words.

  4. The Story of Six • And so he did: • What’s the “story” here? What’s the beginning? The middle? The end? “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.”

  5. How to Read a Six Word Memoir Let’s take this example from I Can’t Keep My Own Secrets: Six-Word Memoirs by Teens Famous + Obscure Read + Note. What’s literally happening? Reread, Consider + Note. Why would this person tell us this? What’s being communicated about his/her identity, or life? Re-reread + Note Punctuation. Pay attention to punctuation, word order, and form. What does it add to the answers you came up with in #2? Re-re-reread + Note Style. Look for imagery, symbolism, alliteration, tone. How does this contribute to the piece? Wake up. Pee. Step on scale. - Kia W.

  6. Now you try... Can’t understand: math, life, time, you. - Natalia J.

  7. How about one more... I’m just a simple human. Being. - Nick H.

  8. In groups of FOUR... • Read, Question, Take Notes On, Reread, your group’s assigned 6 word memoir. • Discuss what you think the writer is trying to convey about his or her life. • You will present your findings in the following fashion: • Write memoir on board • Discuss what you think it’s about • Explain WHY. What’s in the memoir that serves as proof for your findings? • Everyone must contribute to presentation
