  1. Graphic Novels Why we read them, how to read them, and why they are important. Photos courtesy of Google

  2. Why we read graphic novels • Images with text– helps us create images in our head, uncover clues about the narrative, create meaning when we are confused • Graphic novels make us active readers: we have to make connections and analyze each panel carefully Photo courtesy of Google

  3. How to read graphic novels • Graphic novels have three main components: PANELS, GUTTERS, AND BALLOONS

  4. Panels Panels tell a piece of the story. They usually have boundaries. Each panel has an intention: the main idea that the author is trying to communicate.

  5. Gutters Gutters are the spaces between panels. Gutters require the reader to use their imagination to link the panels together.

  6. Balloons Balloons help create context and tone for the story. Balloons can contain the story, character thoughts, dialogue, or sound effects.

  7. How to read graphic novels Graphic novels are read left to right, like a normal book. At the end of the panels in one line, you start at the left side of the next panels. Consider the text and the images in each panel.

  8. How to read graphic novels Some graphic novels are harder to read. Start by reading left to right. If that doesn’t make sense, use clues from the story and graphics to how to read the panels.

  9. How to read graphic novels

  10. Why graphic novels are important • Graphic novels get reluctant readers interested in reading • Graphic novels help teach visual literacy • Graphic novels broaden vocabulary
