What is ARPAS? • The American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists, ARPAS, is the organization which provides certification of animal scientists through examination, continuing education, and commitment to a code of ethics. Continual improvement of individual members is catalyzed through publications (including the PAS journal) and by providing information on educational opportunities.

  3. ARPAS Vision • To be recognized as the national source for certified professionals – who can provide excellence in science based information and are pledged to high ethical standards - to serve producers, industry, and all others desiring professional information on animal sciences.

  4. Core Competency • Certification - of the credentials - of people engaged in animal science, production, and processing.

  5. ARPAS Affiliations • ARPAS is affiliated with five professional societies:American Dairy Science AssociationAmerican Meat Science AssociationAmerican Society of Animal ScienceEquine Nutrition and Physiology SocietyPoultry Science Associationand with the umbrella and service organization, The Federation of Animal Science Societies, FASS.

  6. ARPAS Members • ARPAS Members Represent the Following Groups:- Consultants- Companies providing products and services- Producers, commodity organizations, and related food industries- University, extension, and government staff- Professional societies and related organizations

  7. ARPAS Members come from: • Consultants (21%) • - Professionals in firms providing products and services (37%) • - University, extension, and government staff (33 + 5) (38%) • - Producers, commodity organizations, and related food industries ( 4%)

Why was ARPAS established? • To register professionally competent Animal Scientists • To provide a mechanism to sustain their professional competence • To enhance their professional stature and credibility • To strengthen and promote the profession of the animal sciences • To provide a means for those in industry, companies, and consulting to establish and maintain professional recognition

Categories of Certification • Professional Animal Scientist (PAS) - based on degree, experience, examination, & CEUs. • Registered Animal Specialist (RAS) and Registered Animal Product Specialist (RAPS) - based on experience, examination, & CEUs. • Board Certification (Diplomat) - highest requirements. Available to professionals with an M.S. or Ph.D. degree who qualify and can benefit from the highest level of certification.

  11. Board Certification • Board Certification is in a specific discipline of animal science. • American Colleges of: • Animal Behavior • Animal Food Science • Animal Genetics • Animal Nutrition • Animal Physiology.

  12. ARPAS CEU’s • ARPAS approves events that qualify for CEU’s which provide appropriate education to help members stay current in their field.

How to Become a Member • Exams are given at: • various meetings, nutrition conferences, industry events, etc. • An ARPAS member in good standing can administer the exam to a candidate or group of candidates. • The searchable Membership Directory on the website can be examined for anyone to identify an ARPAS member near them.
