  1. ResurrectionThe bedrock of Christianity • Either we believe: 1 Cor 15:1-11 • In (eternal) life after an earthly death. • That Jesus rose from the dead (for our sins). • Those “in Christ” will enjoy an eternal resurrected life. • Or, we don’t.

  2. “If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable.” 1 Corinthians 15:19

  3. Previously • We looked at Old Testament allusions to baptism and the beautiful imagery portrayed in the New Testament. • We looked at the meaningful imagery being “crucified” with Christ.

  4. We now focus on the significance of “newness of life”

  5. A walk directly contrasted from the (old) man of sin • The old man walked according to the flesh but the new according to God’s spirit. Gal. 5:16-24 • This walk comes from a transformed mind (Rom 12:1-2) from death to life. Cp. Rom. 8:1-14

  6. A new walk patterned after Jesus’ • Who lived to the good pleasure of our heavenly Father. Matt 3:13-17 • Who graciously loved His neighbors. Matt 14:13-21 • Who sacrificed His will for God’s. Luk 22:42

  7. What this life looks like… • Toward those in this world: • As “God so loved the world” so will we… in the likeness of Christ. • That is why mature Christians have this reputation. 1 Tim 3:7 • Toward fellow Christians. • Do not slander one another. Jas 4:11-12 • Instead, love one another. Jn 13:14, 34-35 • It looks like a “newness of life” walk!

  8. Our baptism and “newness of life” • Our being buried with Christ “through baptism into death” signifies our commitment to put our old man of sin to death. • Likewise, our resurrection from the watery grave signifies our commitment to being “raised to walk in newness of life”… in the likeness of our Savior. Romans 6:3-11
