  1. A presentation on the significance of spreading awareness about eveteasing

  2. Eradicating eve-teasing will help women access public places fearlessly and will further gender equality in India — probably, much more than can be achieved by reservation of seats for women in Parliament.

  3. NORMAL RESPONSE TO EVE TEASING Women usually develop a threshold of indifference or tolerance as learnt behaviour towards harassment, and deploy silence or ignore the harassers as a strategy to deal with the harassment – since they feel that no one would either take them seriously or come to assist them.

  4. “Eve teasing” is an euphemism for sexual harassment in public places.

  5. Why is eve teasing taken lightly? • Most women feel that eve teasing constitutes male behaviour that could be overlooked and ignored; it amounts to sexual harassment only when it crosses the threshold of their tolerance. • Verbal harassment is classified as eve teasing and physical harassment or sexually explicit behaviour as sexual harassment. • The two are distinguished by the harm caused by each – eve teasing as largely harmless and sexual harassment as harmful.

  6. LEGAL PROVISIONS • S294 IPC…against obscene act or song in public(3months) • S354 IPC…assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty(2yrs) • S509 IPC…word, gesture or act intending to insult the modesty of a woman(1yr)

  7. CONCLUSION A behavioural change is the only lasting solution to this problem. This requires an extensive public education aimed at every section of society at large.

  8. What can parents and schools do? • Information is power, so make children aware of police system, the hierarchy, contact nos., visiting Noida police website, visiting police stations, police control room etc. • Organize debates on such topics • Organize painting competitions etc. • Prepare songs n slogans • Teaching self defence.
