  1. WF & WP Policy at AUI Pedagogical Implications & Procedural Difficulties

  2. WF-WP Process • “A student exceeding three unexcused absences may be administratively dropped from the course and assigned the grade of ‘WF’.” (AUI Catalog, 2005-2007, p. 65) • “Students may be readmitted to the class only with the permission of both instructor and dean” (AUI Catalog, 2005 – 2007, p. 65) • “Except for absences authorized by the university, the degree to which classroom participation is required and whether or not work missed by a student during an absence may be made up is at the discretion of the instructor.” (AUI Catalog, 2005 – 2007, p. 64)

  3. Absences • “Absences for health reasons have to be certified by the University physicians within 24 hours of the first absence and reported to Enrolment Services.” (ibid, p.65)

  4. WF-WP problems for faculty • Recording absences on POISE • The right of appeal • Inability to master course content due to absence • Flawed understanding of “making up work missed”

  5. Suggestions for improvement • Remove the right of appeal • Use a sliding scale of absences, culminating in automatic removal • Make students who are there the focus of our energy • Reinstate the WF for disciplinary reasons

  6. Ensure clear understanding of: • WF: At the time the mark was given, the student was not making satisfactory academic progress to warrant continued enrollment in the course. • WP: At the time the mark was given, the student was making satisfactory academic progress, but other considerations warranted leaving the course. • AW: At the time the mark was given, the student's attendance record and/or comportment distracted from the learning process of the course and did not warrant continued enrollment in the course.
