  1. Welcome to PDHPE Online!!

  2. What is PDHPE? • PDHPE stands for: physical development, health and physical education. • PDHPE is one of the six key learning areas in primary school that is outlined by the Board of Studies (BOS). • PDHPE shapes individuals into “healthy citizens who are self-regulating, informed, critically reflective and capable of constructing their own healthy lifestyle and minimising risky behaviours.” (Tinning et al., p3, 2006). • AND it is interesting to learn and fun to do!

  3. What is covered in PDHPE? • There are two parts to PDHPE: • PE (physical development): this involves games, sport and in general the movement of the body to develop the person physically. Sport such as tennis, cricket and basketball to name a few together with games such as piggy-in-the-middle and oz tag are examples of such activities that PE incorporates. • PDH (physical development, health): this involves the study of the human body and how people can better their wellbeing and develop healthy lifestyles. This covers physical, mental, social and cultural wellbeing.

  4. Why is PDHPE important? • PDHPE is important as it provides individuals with the ability to develop essential skills to live happy and healthy lives. • Skills such as problem-solving, moving, communicating, interacting and decision-making are all incorporated in the study of PDHPE (PDHPE Syllabus, p 9, 2006) • PDHPE is also fun! Games and sport get people outside and moving around instead of sitting down watching TV or playing video games. • Therefore PDHPE should be learnt in schools as it is essential in developing ‘life skills’ and ‘healthy habits’.
