Substance abuse is a significant problem for all racial and ethnic groups • Ethnic/Racial minorities now comprise about 30% of our nation's population • About half of the nation's largest cities are occupied by ethnic minorities • Theses changes have resulted in differences in community substance use and dependency patterns Definitions • See pages 5-6

  3. Patterns of Drug or Chemical Use • See pages 6-8 • Weather drug addiction is a disease or moral weakness (DR. Lewis believes it is a disease), or both, substance dependence is 100% debilitating • Nobody who is addicted is spared the consequences • Substance Abuse has four characteristics1. It is primary2. It is progressive3. It is ethnic4. Sometimes it is fatal Stages of Substance Abuse • Jellinek (1968)Five Types of Alcoholics:I. Alpha - use a substance to boost their morale, self-confidence or relieve pain.(presubstance abusers).

  4. II. Betas - use of alcohol/other substances often/end to nutritional problems resulting in medical problems (cirrhosis, gastritis) III. Gammas - more than psychological to physical dependence • Users' tolerance for their substance of choice is quite strong IV. Deltas - maintain a steady concentration of the abused substance in their bloodstream V. Epsilons - constantly 1wk forward to and plan for their next high. These are the most difficult people to rehabilitate

  5. Substance Categories I. Depressants (Alcohol - barbiturates such as valium, Librium, Ativan, and Quaaludes) II. Cannabis/Marijuana III. Stimulants - nicotine, caffeine - cocaine - and amphetamines IV. Hallucinogens - LSD - mushrooms, peyote V. Narcotics - heroin – morphine Alcoholism: A Common Addiction • Ninety-five percent (95%) of the alcoholics in 2000 were middle-class (page 11) • 1994 study - four percent (4%) of women had alcohol abuse/alcohol dependency problems • See bottom of page 12 and top of page 13 Color Them Substance Abusers • Cultures are shaped by historical, geographical, economic, social, and political elements • Alcohol consumption is the most prevalent substance used by all peoples • Minority groups typically use less drugs than whites

  6. Undesirable Clients, Unaccepting Helpers • See pages 15-16 • If caregivers are to be effective helping poor people, they must understand the meaning of poverty • Most of the poor are not substance abusers
