THE UTI PREVENTION COLLABOTATIVE • Twelve participating nursing homes in the Eastern region • June – December 2011 • Conference calls and local work groups • Developed and tested surveillance tool August – October • Partnership with Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) - The Glennan Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology

  4. WHY PARTICIPATE ? • Learn from others • Share Best Practices with others • Keep Beth Sholom on cutting edge • Exposure to latest information • May have an influence on direction of initiatives • Efficient practices have positive effect on bottom line • IMPROVE RESIDENT CARE

BENEFITS of PARTICIPATION • Improved UTI tracking/surveillance • Participated in development of tracking form • Monitor inappropriate antibiotic use • Awareness of appropriate use of cultures • Hosted educational opportunity by EVMS experts for collaborative facilities • Emphasis on transfer/discharge information

  6. BENEFITS of PARTICIPATION • Reduction of UTIs, urine cultures, Clostridium difficile (C. difficile), antibiotic use = improved patient safety = improved resident care = reduction in health care cost

  7. FUTURE UTI INITIATIVES • Expand learned surveillance to other HAIs • In-house collaboration of medical and nursing staff to appropriately define and treat UTIs • Collaborate with referring hospitals in reduction of unnecessary indwelling catheters • Work closely with discharge planners in obtaining indwelling catheter history
