  2. So Why Are We Here Today? • To talk about a community effort addressing an important topic in New Brunswick – community food security • To learn: what is food security and why is it important? • To share ways to get involved, take action, and make a difference

Why is it important in New Brunswick? • Many New Brunswick families struggle with access to fresh, healthy, culturally appropriate food at all times. • High cost, limited variety, and low quality of available food make it difficult for families to eat fruits and vegetables. • Widespread food insecurity. • Widespread obesity among adults & children. * Fitzgerald (2010) 2009 New Brunswick Community Survey; Weiner (2011) New Brunswick Tomorrow 2011 Needs Assessment; Lloyd (2010) New Jersey Childhood Obesity Survey.

  4. Solution: A Coordinated Food System

Meeting Community Needs • Challenges like access to healthy food choices and obesity problems led residents and community organizations to find ways to work together • “Learn, Grow, Share” forum brought the community together • A movement to create the NBCFA was launched and the NBCFA was officially recognized by the City Council Nov.16, 2011!

  6. The New Brunswick Community Food Alliance MISSION Improve Community Food Security so that all community members have access to nutritious, safe, affordable, culturally appropriate food at all times in a socially just, sustainable food system.

  7. What’s the Role of the NBCFA? • Bring together people from the community with concerns about the quality, availability and accessibility of healthy food • Recommend ways to improve the local food system • Take action to build food security

Community Priorities • Access to Healthy Food Improve access & local markets. • Schools and Food • Support nutrition education & healthy foods in schools. • Food and Jobs Support economic growth & local ownership. • Health: Food & Nutrition Promote nutrition education & physical activity. • Food Safety Nets Coordinate emergency food & government nutrition programs.

  10. What NBCFA Can Do: • Help create community gardens. • Work with schools to create a healthier food culture in schools. • Create and promote nutrition education programs. • Advocate for better food policies. • Research on the needs of residents. • Help develop food businesses by connecting local vendors with local farmers and residents.
