  1. Earths Oceans • 1. List the major divisions of the global ocean. • 2. Describe the history of Earth’s oceans. • 3. Identify the properties of ocean water. • 4. Describe the interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere.

  2. What are the divisions of the oceans? • Pacific Ocean- Ocean is the largest, flows between Asia and Americas • Atlantic Ocean- Second largest, • Indian Ocean- third largest • Arctic Ocean- Smallest most of its surface is covered with ice • Southern Ocean- extends from the coast of Antarctica to 60 degrees south Latitude

  3. How did the Oceans form? • Contents were once giant land masses called Pangaea 245 million years ago • Pangaea broke apart North Atlantic, Indian Oceans began to form 180 million years ago • Continents continue to move at a rate of 1 to 10 cm per year. Pacific Ocean is getting smaller and other oceans are growing

  4. What are Characteristics of the Ocean • Salty called sodium chloride most abundant dissolved solid, the salt has been added from dissolved minerals in streams and rivers that are carried to the ocean • Salinity is the amount of dissolved solids in a given liquid. • Climate-Coastal water with hotter drier climates has higher salinity, cooler humid climate has lower salinity. Heat increases evaporation rate which removes water but leaves salt. Humid climates has more fresh water running into the ocean in these climates.

  5. What are Characteristics of the Ocean? (CONT.) • Movement- Slower moving areas of water develop higher salinity • Temperature- Ocean water decreases as depth increases. • Surface zone- Warm top layer can extend 300m below sea level, Sun heats 100m and heated water mixes with cooler water from below. • Thermocline-Second layer 300m-700m. Temp. drops with increased depth faster than any other. • Deep zone- Bottom of Thermocline to bottom of ocean.

  6. What are Characteristics of the Ocean? (CONT.) • Surface Temp changes- Temp. varies with latitude, directness of sunlight and time of year

  7. How the Ocean interacts between the Ocean and Atmosphere • Oceans absorb and holds energy from sunlight which helps regulate atmosphere temp. • Oceans absorb and release thermal energy slower than dry land if it didn’t we would have violent weather and life could not exist, • The oceans currents cause warmer weather in areas that would not be as warm
