  2. Course Objective The aim of the course is to analyze the most fundamental aspects of the process of European integration

  3. Course Outline • Each 3h session includes theoretical presentation and case studies. The main topics covered in the lecture are: • 1. The History of European integration • 2. The creation of European Communities • 3. The creation of the European Union • 4. EU Institutions • 5. EU Decision Making System • 6. The protection of Fundamental rights

  4. 7.The Citizenship of the EU • 8. EU-Member States: the principles • 9. The internal market of the EU • 10. Economic and Monetary Union • 11. EU competition policy • 12. EU social policy • 13. Freedom, security and justice • 14. External action by the EU

  5. Course Evaluation • The overall evaluation in this course is based on the following items: • Comprehensive Final Exam (70% of the final grade) covering all the units and topics presented in the lectures. • Class participation 30%, including essays (approximately 5000 words), giving written answers to questions formulated in the end of the lectures or taking part in the discussion taking place in the class) • Students have the right to elaborate an essay and present it in class.

  6. Course Material • The main textbooks are: • EU law, Chalmers/Davies/Monti, 2015 (CUP) • U Law: Text, Cases, and Materials, 2015, P. Craig/ Gráinne de Búrca • The Substantive Law of the EU: The Four Freedoms, Catherine Barnard, 2019 • Recent material can be found in the EU internet site. • In the e-class of the Course, students can find the lectures slides before the course. See AUEB website, category e-class. The access needs a code which is given by the Secretariat of the relative Department.

  7. Some basic rules • Attendance at each course is compulsory. Three justified absences from each course are accepted • Legal Aspects of European Integration:6 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System credits), advanced Level.
