  2. Stages of Homesickness • Excitement • Frustration • Depression • Acceptance • Every person is different • Can get stuck in cycles • Can go out of order • Not everyone experiences all

  3. Attending College means: • Leaving an environment that is familiar to you • Habits will change and you will assume new responsibilities • Your focus will change and you will need to develop new skills

  4. Congrats! Now what?! • Initial anxiety – everything seems scary and intimidating or • Initial elation (honeymoon period) – everything seems so interesting and cool!

  5. What next? • Culture shock – yes, it is different from home! • Superficial Adjustment OR • Depression-Frustration

  6. Acceptance You accept that things are different.

  7. What can I do about it? • Don’t wait for it to go away. Talk to someone! • Counselor? • Family member • Roommate • Student • Call Mrs. Tosspon (949-878-2223)

  8. What can I do about it? • Bring some home along with you! • Pack photos of family & friends • Eat a familiar food once a week • Make friends on campus • Get involved and keep busy! Work, intern, volunteer.

  9. What can I do about it? • Be patient with yourself.

  10. “I don’t belong here” • You may start to think, “I don’t belong here” • They made a mistake @ admissions! • There is no one else here like me! • I don’t understand the assignments/materials • I can’t handle this • I don’t deserve to be here

  11. Coping with “I don’t belong…” • Internal • You ARE capable • There was no mistake • Without struggle there is no growth • You deserve it as much as anyone else (probably MORE so!) • External • Talk to someone • Find tutoring (writing center, peer tutoring center • Get involved • Get busy

  12. In the end, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks – all that matter is what you think and what you do.
