  33. DISCUSSION TOPICS PVC PIPE FOR GRAVITY SEWER APPLICATIONS • Uni-Bell PVC Pipe Association • PVC Sewer Pipe Market Share • PVC Sewer Pipe Longevity • Gravity Sewer Opportunities by Application • Gravity Sewer Opportunities by Competing Material • Creating New Opportunities

  34. GRAVITY SEWER OPPORTUNITIES APPLICATIONS • Large diameter • Deep bury • Shallow bury • Corrosion failures

  35. LARGE DIAMETERPVC SEWER PIPE STANDARDS • Through 48-inch: • AASHTO M304 • ASTM F679 • ASTM F794 • ASTM F949 • Through 60-inch: • ASTM F1803

  36. LARGE DIAMETERPVC SEWER PIPE USAGE • Many specifiers unfamiliar with F679 products • Rigid concrete thought to be better suited for large diameters — highway engineer mentality • Deeper bury with larger pipes • H2S ignored due to wall thickness • Cities do not understand that pipe stiffness applies to all pipe sizes

  37. DEEP BURY ALLOWABLE BURIAL DEPTH 8 6 Percentage Deflection 4 2 DR 35 0

  38. DEEP BURY ALLOWABLE BURIAL DEPTH 8 6 Percentage Deflection 4 2 DR 26 0

  39. SHALLOW BURY LIVE LOAD CAPABILITIES

  40. SHALLOW BURY LIVE LOAD CAPABILITIES • Truck Weight: 13 tons • Pipe stiffness: 29 psi • Pipe Diameter: 30 in • Embedment: Crushed rock and sand with some silt and clay Source: PAVCO demonstration

  41. CORROSION CAUSES OF FAILURE Source: “EPA Rehabilitation of Wastewater Collection and Water Distribution Systems” 2009

  42. CORROSION CAUSES OF FAILURE Source: “EPA Rehabilitation of Wastewater Collection and Water Distribution Systems” 2009

  43. CORROSION THE H2S PROBLEM • Why is the Wastewater Environment so Corrosive? • Given the right conditions, the wastewater environment facilitates the formation of sulfuric acid which can have a pH of 1 or less. • The right conditions are: • H2S gas present • Warm temperature • Moisture • These conditions promote the formation of acidophilic bacteria which feed on sulfur from H2S gas and release sulfuric acid that corrodes concrete, mortar, steel and ductile iron. Source: “EPA Rehabilitation of Wastewater Collection and Water Distribution Systems” 2009

  44. CORROSION THE H2S PROBLEM • Because oxidizing bacteria need moisture and H2S the predominate location for growth is at the crown of the pipe. Therefore corrosion and corresponding damage or failure occurs at this location. Source: “EPA Rehabilitation of Wastewater Collection and Water Distribution Systems” 2009

  45. CORROSION CASE STUDY: ROWLETT, TX • Consultant held accountable • Failed to “specify a type of pipe more • resistant to hydrogen sulfide.” • Iron replaced with PVC

  46. DISCUSSION TOPICS PVC PIPE FOR GRAVITY SEWER APPLICATIONS • Uni-Bell PVC Pipe Association • PVC Sewer Pipe Market Share • PVC Sewer Pipe Longevity • Gravity Sewer Opportunities by Application • Gravity Sewer Opportunities by Competing Material • Creating New Opportunities

  47. COMPETING MATERIALS STRATEGIES DUCTILE IRON • Negative: burial-depth restrictions • Negative: closed specifications • Positive: H2S corrosion • Positive: low stiffness for large diameter DI • Examples: • Watertown, CT • Bossier City, LA • Cape Fear, NC

  48. COMPETING MATERIALS STRATEGIES CLAY • Negative: clay cities well entrenched • Negative: longevity studies • 100-year life for clay • 50-year life for PVC • Positive: 20% breakage rate for clay • Positive: PVC users wouldn’t use clay if pipe were free

  49. COMPETING MATERIALS STRATEGIES CLAY • Positive: “You’ve got to be joking— I didn’t know they still made clay.” • Examples: • Phoenix, AZ • Cleveland, OH • Newcastle County , DE • Lansing, MI

  50. COMPETING MATERIALS STRATEGIES FIBERGLASS • Positive: testimonials from contractors • Negative: lack of awareness of PVC large diameter products • Positive: pipe deflection (Diamond Video) • Obfuscation: pipe stiffness vs. stiffness number • Positive: safety factors: • PVC • SF = 4 @ 7.5% deflection (or SF = 6 @ 5%) • Fiberglass • SF = 1.5 to 2.0 @ 4% deflection
