  1. Recent work at Cincinnati A. Schwartz, A. Drutskoy, M. Belhorn Belle-II PID Meeting, KEK 8 May 2009 • Summary: • have received prototype mirror from OSI • have investigated/tested some epoxies/adhesives • have attached OSI mirror to Babar quartz bar • have reviewed stand-off wedge with OSI. They are now putting together preliminary pricing and delivery schedule for 16 wedges and 16 40-cm-wide mirrors; will take ~two weeks. • OSI has begun work on a prototype wedge; will take 4 weeks.

  2. Mirror fabrication • Optical Solutions Incorporated (OSI) (New Hampshire, USA) • Specializes in high quality optics, custom work, prototyping • recommended by Zygo • Designed optics for Subaru Telescope Fabricated small spherical mirror: Challenging optic, as center of curvature is off-axis. (Mathematica study indicated off-axis improved single photon resolution for ~vertical tracks.)

  3. Optical epoxies/adhesives • Two main types: single-component UV-cured, and two-component self-curing • UV-cured adhesives: large vendor is Norland. • NOA 61: popular in optics industry, used by OSI, very runny, index=1.56 • NOA 63: better UV transmission than 61, more viscous, index=1.56 • NOA84: even more viscous, index=1.46 (good), but worse transmission than 61/63 • Two-component: largest vendor is Epoxy Technologies • EPOTEK 301-2: used by Babar, mechanically strong, index=1.6, found to yellow with age

  4. Epoxy-ing mirror to bar Tried NOA61, 63, 84; we then chose 63 (easiest to work with) Mirror optic UV lamp Bar

  5. Remove air bubbles from epoxy, cure: • NOA-63 pre-cured in ~1 minute, fully-cured in few hours • Bond is very strong • Final alignment was tricky – production jigging needs some thought • Very different procedure from what Babar did (they epoxied horizontally using slow-cure 2-component epoxy, centrifuged to remove bubbles).
