  1. Sin Hurts A Lesson from Adam and Eve (Gen 3:1-24)

  2. Introduction • “The fact of sin may be laughed at, but it can never be ignored. In every area of life the effects of it are revealed (Crabtree: Zondervan Pastor’s annual P85) • “Sin is not a convenient invention of parsons to keep them in their job: it is a universal fact” • The Bible is very clear about the fact of sin • Rom 3:23; 6:23 & 1 Jn1:8 • “The experiences of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden are divine revelations of the hurt of sin. They discovered the painful truth that a person cannot transgress a command of God, deny God’s right to command, or fail to attain God’s standards without feeling the result of the choice. Like them, people today choose to yield to the natural impulse to sin. The severity of sin’s hurt depends on many factors, but no one can escape it.” (Crabtree: Zondervan Pastor’s Annual P:85)

  3. Sin Hurts Because it Brings Separation • Sins separates humans from God • Satan promised Adam and eve that they would not die but rather would be like God and gain the knowledge of good and evil if they just disobeyed God’s command (Gen 3:4-5) • Gen 3:23-24; Is 59:1-2 • Sin separates person from person • Adam and Eve learn this through the sin of their son Cain slaying his brother Abel (Gen 4:1-16) • Cain becomes angry and his countenance falls causing him to be questioned by God (Gen 4:6-7) • Cain’s anger leads him to murder his brother (4:8) • As a result of his actions, Cain was cursed to be a fugitive and a vagabond (Gen 4:11-13) • As long as people sin, there will be some type of separation among people, and the hurt of sin will be felt

  4. Sin Hurts Because it Brings Suffering • We can see from the experience of Adam and Eve that much of human suffering is directly related to human sin…Both the sinner and others can suffer because of the actions of sin • Gen 3:7-13; Ez. 9:5-7; Ps 38:4 • The address to the serpent (Gen 3:14-15) • The address to the woman Eve (Gen 3:16) • The address to the man Adam (Gen 3:17-19)

  5. Sin Hurts Because it Brings Death • Rom 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” • Rom 5:12 “Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned—“ • James 1:15 “Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.”

  6. Conclusion • We can see from this lesson that there is no one here who has not sinned • We can conclude from this that no one here has not felt hurt or may be currently hurting • The only way to relieve the hurt is to follow the plan God has for you by obeying the commands of His Son
