What do we know about Rwanda? Any movies, books, or television references?
  4. Rwanda 1994 2 Ethnic groups involved Hutu (approximately 85%) Tutsi (14%)
  5. Where is Rwanda?
  6. The aggressors were the Hutu They disliked the Tutsi. Throughout history, it has been a battle between the Hutu and the Tutsi to have power. This time it exploded into a fierce and violent war/genocide. Within weeks, 800,000 men, women, and children were killed. This is about as many as three quarters of the Tutsi population and 20% of the total population in Rwanda. At the same time, thousands of Hutu were murdered because they opposed the killing campaign and the forces directing it. (So Hutu were killed by their own)
  7. Within weeks, 800,000 men, women, and children were killed. This is about as many as three quarters of the Tutsi population. At the same time, thousands of Hutu were murdered because they opposed the killing campaign and the forces directing it. (So Hutu were killed by their own) They raided towns, tortured and massacred the people in the towns, burned fields, and stole cattle
  8. The Hutu Ten Commandments 1. Every Hutu should know that a Tutsi woman, whoever she is, works for the interest of her Tutsi ethnic group. As a result, we shall consider a traitor any Hutu who marries a Tutsi woman befriends a Tutsi woman employs a Tutsi woman as a secretary 2. Every Hutu should know that our Hutu daughters are more suitable and conscientious in their role as woman, wife and mother of the family. Are they not beautiful, good secretaries and more honest? 3. Hutu women, be vigilant and try to bring your husbands, brothers and sons back to reason. 4. Every Hutu should know that every Tutsi is dishonest in business. His only aim is the supremacy of his ethnic group. As a result, any Hutu who does the following is a traitor: makes a partnership with Tutsi in business invests his money or the government's money in a Tutsi enterprise lends or borrows money from a Tutsi gives favors to Tutsi in business (obtaining import licenses, bank loans, construction sites, public markets, etc.). 5. All strategic positions, political, administrative, economic, military and security should be entrusted only to Hutu.
  9. 6. The education sector (school pupils, students, teachers) must be majority Hutu. 7. The Rwandan Armed Forces should be exclusively Hutu. The experience of the October 1990 war has taught us a lesson. No member of the military shall marry a Tutsi. 8. The Hutu should stop having mercy on the Tutsi. 9. The Hutu, wherever they are, must have unity and solidarity and be concerned with the fate of their Hutu brothers. The Hutu inside and outside Rwanda must constantly look for friends and allies for the Hutu cause, starting with their Hutu brothers. They must constantly counteract Tutsi propaganda. The Hutu must be firm and vigilant against their common Tutsi enemy. 10. The Social Revolution of 1959, the Referendum of 1961, and the Hutu Ideology, must be taught to every Hutu at every level. Every Hutu must spread this ideology widely. Any Hutu who persecutes his brother Hutu for having read, spread, and taught this ideology is a traitor.
  10. Tutsi Identification Card
  11. Darfur Where is it located? What do you know about Darfur?
  12. Darfur There are between 40 and 80 different ethnic groups here Mainly groups trying to gain power (government versus rebel groups) 300,000 died from 2003-2005 Over 400 villages completely destroyed Around 4.7 million (of the 6 million population) have been affected 2.7 million are displaced (living as refugees)
  13. Where is Darfur?
  14. Between the Sudan Liberation Movement/ Army (SLM/A) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and the Sudanese government Both groups accused the Sudanese government of being oppressive. They thought the government was favoring the Arabs and not the non-Arabs Basically, it was government verses rebel groups
  15. - Government military targeted civilians Many have died from: Starvation Disease Combat Crisis continues…
  16. Invisible Soldiers What do you think this term means?
  17. WHO is involved? Children and rebel groups WHEN did this happen? In the past and HAPPENING NOW WHERE is this happening? Actually, it is happening all over the world WHAT is going on? Children are being forced to fight against their will
  18. Essentially, children are joining OR are being tricked into joining OR are abducted. They are forced to fight alongside adults in combat Some cook and do odd chores though many are face to face with violence and the threat of death
  19. FACTS Child Soldiers are being used in over 36 countries worldwide. Today, there are approximately 300,000 child soldiers fighting in armed conflict.
  20. Child soldiers are under the age of 18, some as young as 7. Children are used as soldiers because they are easily manipulated and are too young to understand their actions.
  21. Child soldiers use AK-47s, M-16s and grenades because they are easy to use. Orphans and refugees sometimes see their only hope for survival is by joining a militia.
  22. Child soldiers are used to clear landmines and as human shields. Child soldiers are often given drugs to help them cope with their emotions making it easier for them to kill.
  23. Girl soldiers are often used as domestic sex slaves. Child soldiers carry supplies and act as messengers, cooks and lookouts.
  24. Child soldiers are sometimes forced to commit atrocities against their own families and villages. Many child soldiers are not welcome back home after a conflict ends because of cultural superstition.
  25. Children are the victims of conflict after witnessing or participating in murder and rape, becoming disabled, homeless or psychologically traumatized.
  26. How do children become child soldiers? About 2/3 of child soldiers volunteer, usually as a response to the murdering and dehumanization of family members by other militias; many child soldiers are abducted or tricked into service
  27. Impact on the Children In the past 20 years, it is estimated that 2 million children have died as a direct result of war between factions, and well over 6 million have been permanently disabled or direly injured. And this is only the physical impact. Malnutrition/Disease, injury, death PTSD, Depression, Eating Disorders, Adjustment issues, personality disorders
