  3. Research Design • Pre-experimental • One shot case study • Symbolic Design: X1OX2 • Groups are not randomly assigned • Action researcher will survey 2 groups of highly engaged parents at PSX. One group (X1) will be the parents of the action researcher’s 5th grade students and the other group (X2) will come from the 4th grade.

Threats to Internal Validity • Historydifferent group of parents since starting this project • Instrumentationresearcher created parent surveys; bias; honesty • Mortalitysome parents may not participate or move from area • Selectionnon-random parent groups • Selection-Maturation Interactionparents vary in age and education.

  5. Threats to External Validity • Ecological having the surveys done in school; inclement weather; mood. • Generalizable Conditionsaction researcher could be making assumptions that simply are not true; results could be completely different depending on the group being surveyed. • Selection-Treatment Interaction parents were not randomly selected. • Specificity of Variablespersonal interactions with the researcher could skew the results. • Treatment Diffusion two groups of parents. • Experimenter Effects there may be bias due to age, race, gender. • Hawthorne Effect participants may modify their responses because they know they have been labeled “highly engaged parents.”

  8. Correlation Note: A response of “1” to the question of PTA membership is “Strongly Agree.”

  9. Data Analysis • There is a strong correlation to being Latino and being a member of the PTA. • 5 out of the 7 Latino parents are members of the PTA. • Going into this project I have noticed a particularly high level of engagement from my Latino parents and students. • Additional research is needed.
