IEARDA Program Introduction • Project Title: Strengthening Research Training and Administrative capacity of Office of Research and Development • Funded by: Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), National Institutes of Health (NIH) Grant Number:1G11HD065299-01 • Project Period: Five Years Award ( 2010 – 2015) • Principal Investigator: Nelson Kakande • Awadee: Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC)

Goal of IEARDA • The goal of IEARDA program is to develop cadres of research administrators that can address current and future NIH and other funding agencies’ grant policies and procedures, and to strengthen the research training and grant administrative infrastructure of the Office of Research and Development (ORD) at JCRC and its affiliated institutions

IEARDA ADVISORY BOARD The panel draws upon top leadership and experienced researchers/program implementers at respective Institutions . • Prof. Peter Mugyenyi , Executive Director Joint Clinical Research (JCRC) • Dr. Cissy Kityo, Deputy Executive Director Joint Clinical Research (JCRC) • Prof. Nozom Mukiibi, Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) • Dr. Fredrick Kakembo, Uganda Christian University Mukono

IEARDA Management • The IEARDA Advisory Board roles: • Offer technical, infrastructural and logistical support to IEARDA secretariat and respective institutions ORD • Participate in selection of personnel from their institutions to be involved in the training • Approve and follow up institutional ORD sustainability plans • Monitor implementation of IEARDA activities, strategic planning and activity plan execution • Participate in annual review of IEARDA program activities .

IEARDA Management Cont. • The IEARDA Secretariat: • Comprises of a full time Program administrator (Ms. Florence Mirembe) who receive technical support from the IEARDA administrator (Ms. Regina Namirembe) and working closely with research administrators (ORD) at the 3 IEARDA partner Institutions • The program coordinator (Ms. Florence Mirembe) oversees all administrative aspects of the project and provides a variety of comprehensive administrative support including to: Organize training workshops, meetings and conference calls ; Develop quarterly and annual reports of the program; Liaising with the three IEARDA partner institutions; Document all training activities; Offer required assistance to facilitators for the training programs; Tracking the outcomes and success of the program and Administering the logistical aspects of the training.

JCRC- IEARDA Program Objectives • To strengthen the research training capacity and administrative infrastructure of the Office of Research and Development (ORD) at Joint Clinical Research Centre ( JCRC) and the capability of its affiliated institutions. The ORD will: • Constitute a one-stop resource centre for grants information and technical support to investigators • Identify and train teams of scientists in grants proposal writing, application process and award management • Identify and regularly disseminate information on trainings, conferences, grant opportunities and other relevant information • Provide necessary technical support/training to grants managers on financial regulatory mechanisms, submitting FSR and annual reports

JCRC- IEARDA Program Objectives • To assist affiliated academic and research institutions in standardization and completing mandatory registration necessary for NIH electronic grant applications by: • Ensuring and assisting institutions in Uganda attain the necessary registration that enable them to apply for grants electronically (NIH grants , other federal funds) • Providing hands-on training in electronic grant submission and responding to errors • Providing an oversight function and support supervision for the nascent research and grants management offices

JCRC- IEARDA Program Objectives • To foster and strengthen collaboration among social science, medical, clinical, and public health disciplines so that trainees can develop capacity to manage multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary research by: • Providing interdisciplinary training of the research scientists • Identifying and connecting the trainees to suitable mentors in different disciplines required for a multi-disciplinary research question • Providing an online discussion forum for research scientists and alumni trained on grantmanship

JCRC- IEARDA Program Objectives • To strengthen the capacity of the office of research and develop personnel to spearhead the translation of research findings into practice and policy advocacy thereby ensuring that evidence-based interventions from operational research are shared and implemented efficiently in order to improve health services through: • Training scientists on introduction to dissemination and implementation research • Introducing to scientists on how to translate research into practice and policy • Training teams of multi-disciplinary scientists on public engagement with research

JCRC- IEARDA Program Objectives • To provide the JCRC International Extramural Associate (IEA) with training on NIH grantmanship so as to obtain knowledge and skills required to effectively administer NIH and other agencies awards. This was achieved through: • The IEA’s participation in the long distance learning • The IEA’s three- week residency training at NIH

Key Accomplishments • The IEA’s participated in the long distance learning and three- week residency training at NIH • Reviewed and finalized IEARDA 5year activity plan - approved by NIH • Recruitment of IEARDA Program Coordinator • Established the IEARDA Advisory Board • Furnishing Offices Of Research and Development (ORD) at JCRC, Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) and Mukono University • Established a list serve (62 scientists ) for Disseminating trainings, conferences/workshops and grants Opportunities • Reviewing the Research policies at IEARDA partner institutions
