  2. Outline • ENUM in France • Expectations • Numerobis • ENUM administration • Functional model • Service requirements and constraints • DNS analysis • Trial steps • Conclusion

  3. ENUM in France • May 2001: public consultation initiated by the the National Regulation Authority • June 2001: creation of a national working group on ENUM • February 2002: call for a trial project • March 2002: project proposal • May 2002: proposal accepted → Numerobis • February 2003: start of Numerobis project • Numerobis project is running until September 2004

  4. Expectations • Numerobis main objectives: • To develop an administration model for ENUM in France • To open the model for services provision by ASPs • To identify services requirements and constraints • To take into account Number Portability • To explore different choices of DNS-related techniques • To implement an ENUM platform in order to validate the defined model

  5. Numerobis (characteristics) • A RNRT project (French National Network for Research in Telecommunications) • Different categories of partners: • University (INT) • TSPs (fixed: FT and mobile: SFR, Orange) • ccTLD Registry: AFNIC (.fr) • ENUM technology oriented • Experimentation but no commercial offer • Advanced analysis on DNS-related techniques • Keeping a close eye on the trends of standardization • Trial uses 3.3.e164.arpa and reserved numbering blocks

  6. ENUM administration (issues) • Common agreement (ENUM national WG) • ENUM domain names administration should be mapped on E.164 numbers administration • No ENUM Domain names commercialization • Competition regards services provision • Tier2 is the entity who has contracted with the end user for the telephone subscription • TSPs or mandated third entities handle the ENUM domain names database • Guaranties • Consistency with the numbering plan • No need for a validation entity (validation is internal and simple)

  9. Services: requirements and constraints (1/2) • Objective  • To identify a representative services panel • To derive these services' requirements • Benchmark services • Conversational services • Messaging: email, SMS, MMS • Web • Streaming • Directory services • Constraints • Load supported by DNS servers • Delay caused by DNS interrogation • Zone updates • Availability • ….

  10. DNS ENUM MSC Resolver 1 HLR VLR Services: requirements and constraints (2/2) Related constraints • Service case Internet 3 GSM GW 2 IP 4 6 7 5 message messag VoIP service provider VoIP to GSM Call

  11. DNS analysis • User ENUM = public DNS on the Internet • Issues regarding privacy: no confidentiality, spam,… • Serious concerns for different constraints • Solutions may reside in services • DNSsec : • A solution for authentication and data integrity, but not for confidentiality • Increase time for data updating, responses • Impact on data organization • Implementations are still non mature • Still thinking about its potential use in ENUM

  12. Trial steps • Current • DNS infrastructure recommendations for Tier1 and Tier2 entities • Domain Name Servers being setup • ENUM resolver design • Enumservices used: E2U+sip, E2U+h323… • Next steps • ENUM resolver implementation • Administrative procedures • Architecture validation • DNS simulator

  13. Conclusion • Numerobis project added values: • An experience on ENUM technology • Guidelines for future ENUM administration and implementation in France • Contribution to standards • More info : http://www.numerobis.prd.fr/
