  3. The 1st Klan • Founded by ex confederates, as a “terrorist group” • Abused freedmen, persons from the Bureau, intimidated voters. . . • Turned elections around

  4. Effects • Republicans lost support. . . . African Americans afraid to vote against democrats • Instilled fear in African Americans and also some whites • Southerners thought this would make the government turn the south. . . Soon the Klan stopped and phased out

  5. After the Fact • Began lynching of African Americans • Government began to prosecute individuals and by the mid 1870’s the Klan was replaced by other groups.
