  1. Geometric Shapes Ms. Blain’s 4th grade!

  2. Circle Characteristics of a Circle: • Round • Never Ending • Any point on the circle is the same distance from the center. Vocabulary of a Circle: Diameter = A line segment drawn from any point on the circle through the center to another point on the circle. C=2πr A = π • r² Radius = A line segment drawn from the center of the circle to any point on the circle.

  3. Create your Own Circle! Directions: 1) Identify on your computer Paint Shop 2) Open Paint Shop and click on New - This should open to a blank page. 3) Use the tools to create your own circle. 4) Once you have created the circle label it with diameter, radius, and circumference. 5) Next to the circle you created, identify this circle with different characteristics. 6) Also somewhere on the page should be the formulas for a circle. 7) Place your name, using a text box, on the upper right hand corner, using 12 point font. 8) Print it out!

  4. Square Characteristics of a square: • Four equal sides • Four equal angles • Is a box Vocabulary for a Square: Angle = Two rays with a common endpoint form an angle. Area = The number of square units needed to cover a surface like a wall, floor or other two-dimensional shape. Perimeter = The perimeter of any closed figure is the distance around the outside of the figure.

  6. Rectangle Characteristics of a Rectangle: • Two Sides are longer then the other two sides. • Still had area and perimeter. • Can be many different sizes. Vocabulary for a Square: Angle = Two rays with a common endpoint form an angle. Area = The number of square units needed to cover a surface like a wall, floor or other two-dimensional shape Perimeter = The perimeter of any closed figure is the distance around the outside of the figure.

Directions: 1) Identify on your computer Paint Shop 2) Open Paint Shop and click on New - This should open to a blank page. 3) Use the tools to create your own rectangle. 4) Once you have created the rectangle and label it with perimeter, the four equal sides, the four equal angles, and diameter. 5) Next to the rectangle you created, identify this rectangle with different characteristics. 6) Also somewhere on the page should be the formulas for rectangle. 7) Place your name, using a text box, on the upper right hand corner, using 12 point font. 8) Print it out!

  8. Triangle Characteristics of a Triangle: • -Three sides • Don’t all have to be equal. • - Is a closed figure • - Has three angles ½ BxH = Area

  9. Create your own Triangle! Directions: 1) Identify on your computer Paint Shop 2) Open Paint Shop and click on New - This should open to a blank page. 3) Use the tools to create your own triangle. 4) Once you have created the triangle and label it with it’s height and area. 5) Next to the triangle you created, identify this triangle with different characteristics. 6) Also somewhere on the page should be the formulas for triangle. 7) Place your name, using a text box, on the upper right hand corner, using 12 point font. 8) Print it out!

  10. Time to create your own geometric booklet! What needs to be included: 1) Each of the shapes that were discussed and made on Paint Shop. The drawing should include the each of the specified elements. - Circle - Square - Rectangle - Triangle 2) A creative cover page should be made. 3) Three blank pages should be included in the back of your booklet.

  15. Create your own Snowflake! When you are done creating your geometric shape, go online to the following website….. http://snowflakes.lookandfeel.com/favicon.ico The only shapes that can be used are the ones in your geometric booklet. When you are done creating your snowflake, print it out and place it in the back of your booklet. I also want you to label the different shapes you used.

  16. Homework • You will use your geometric figures booklet to complete this homework assignment. • Take the last page in your booklet and make a list of the shapes in your booklet, that you see outside of school. • This can include a shoebox, which is a rectangle, or the sun, which is a circle. • You should have at least 10 items on your list when you return to class.
