  1. MEN 11 11/26/12 Mrs.Cabanero/Ms.SafferGoal: Students will be able to calculate relative error in measurement CCS: A-CED.1, A-CED.3 Do Now: 1.Review: A proposal was made in the state senate to raise the minimum wage from $6.75 to $7.15 an hour. What is the proposed percent of increase to the nearest tenth of a percent? % increase =

  2. Relative error Regents Students calculated the area of a playing field to be 8,100 square feet. The actual area of the field is 7,678.5 square feet. Find the relative error in the area, to the nearest thousandth.

  3. Step1. measured area = 8,100 sq. feet actual area = 7,678.5 sq. feet Step2. relative error = = 0.05489 answer (to the nearest thousandth)

  4. Regents Ryan estimates the measurement of the volume of a popcorn container to be 282 cubic inches. The actual volume of the popcorn container is 289 cubic inches. What is the relative error of Ryan’s measurement to the nearest thousandth?

  5. Step1. measured volume = 282 cubic inches actual volume = 289 cubic inches Step2. relative error = = 0.0242 answer (to the nearest thousandth)

  6. Regents: The actual measurements of a rectangle are 2.6 cm by 6.9 cm. Andy measures the sides as 2.5 cm by 6.8 cm. In calculating the area, what is the relative error, to the nearestthousandth?

  7. Step1. Find the actual area of the rectangle. A = = 2.6(6.9) = 17.94 sq. cm Step2. Find the measured area. A = = 2.5(6.8) = 17.0 sq. cm Step3.relative error = = = = 0.0523 (to the nearest thousandth)

  8. Classwork: to be collected 1. Corinne calculated the area of the paper plate to be 50.27 square inches. If the actual area of the plate is 55.42 square inches, what is the relative error in calculating the area, to the nearest thousandth? 2. Sophie measured a piece of paper to be 21.7 cm by 28.5 cm. The piece of paper is actually 21.6 cm by 28.4 cm. Determine the relative error in calculating the area to the nearest thousandth.
