Podcast 8.1 The Meaning of A Balanced Equation

Podcast 8.1 The Meaning of A Balanced Equation. Consider: 4NH 3 + 5O 2  6H 2 O + 4NO. For every 4 Ammonias and 5 Oxygens , you can make 6 Waters and 4 Nitrogen Monoxides Chemists say “for every 4 moles of NH 3 , 5 moles of O 2 are required, etc.”

  1. Podcast 8.1The Meaning of A Balanced Equation

  2. Consider: 4NH3 + 5O2 6H2O + 4NO • For every 4 Ammonias and 5 Oxygens, you can make 6 Waters and 4 Nitrogen Monoxides • Chemists say “for every 4 moles of NH3, 5 moles of O2 are required, etc.” • “Stoichiometry” refers to the relative quantities of moles. It also refers to calculations that make use of mole ratios.

  3. Balanced Equations are Like Recipes • The recipe for a cheese sandwich: • Predict how many cheese sandwiches, as defined by the picture to the right, you can make if you have 6 pieces of bread and 4 slices of cheese.

  4. If I need to make 14 sandwiches, how many slices of bread do I need?

  5. The Chemistry Café cook has a loaf which had 33 slices and a package of cheese that has 15 slices. He is making sandwiches that have 2 pieces of both bread and cheese. How many sandwiches can he make?

  6. Another Kind of Recipe • Atricyclefactorygetsashipmentwith 400 seatsand 600 wheels. Use your ideas about Limiting Reactants to explain how you would figure out how manytricyclescanbemade.

  7. Example One Consider : 4NH3 + 5O2 6H2O + 4NO How many moles of H2O are produced if 0.176 mol of O2 are used?

  8. Example Two Consider : 4NH3 + 5O2 6H2O + 4NO How many moles of NO are produced in the reaction if 17 mol of H2O are also produced?

  9. Example Three Consider : 4NH3 + 5O2 6H2O + 4NO How many grams of H2O are produced if 1.9 mol of NH3 are combined with excess oxygen?

  10. Example Four Consider : 4NH3 + 5O2 6H2O + 4NO How many grams of O2 are required to produce 0.3 mol of H2O?

  11. Example Five Consider : 4NH3 + 5O2 6H2O + 4NO How many grams of NO is produced if 12 g of O2 is combined with excess ammonia?
