Timelines and Dates • Feb. 8-28 - Magnet Application Window • Feb. 15-Mar 5 – 8th gr. teachers enter course recs. into SAM (School Assistant Module) online • Feb. 26-Mar 16 – Registration information presented to rising 9th graders and work begins on Graduation Plans • Mar 6- April 16 – High school course selections are entered in SAM/SPAN by the students during the school day

  4. More dates • Mid March – Parents informed of Magnet application results • April 16 – Registration ENDS • April 27 – Student assignments locked in • May 1 – Graduation plans are sent to High School deans • May 14 – Assignment strips distributed and transfer forms and information available

  5. 2 Courses of Study • Future Ready Core– for 9th graders entering in 2009-10 and Later 2. Occupational- for only selected IEP students who are excluded from EOC Proficiency Level requirements

What Is It? • It is the NEW Course of Study developed to provide a strong academic foundation so that students are prepared and have many options when they graduate from high school whether they go to college or to work • The main thing is that students graduate. . . . Future Ready

  7. Courserequirements • A 4thMath credit (rather than 3 credits) • 2 elective credits from CTE (Career and Technical ed.), Arts, or Second Language • Concentration of 4 elective credits in one field of interest such as CTE, JROTC, Arts Ed., or other subject • A total 26 total credits

  8. TestingRequirements Five EOC tests must be passed- counts as 25% of grade • Algebra I • Biology • Civics and Economic • English I • U.S. History *Also, some schools have other local requirements such as community service hours

  9. English • English I, II, III, IV are required for graduation from High School (Honors and Advanced Placement level classes carry more weight for a higher GPA) • Students must pass the English I end-of-course test to graduate

  10. Social Studies • World History 2. Civics and Economics 3. US History Must have a credit in each of the classes above:C & E and US History are 2 of the essential 5 requiring an end-of-course test (must pass the class and pass the EOC with level 3 or 4)

  11. Science • Biology • Physical science, Chemistry, or Physics • Earth/Environmental Three credits are required for graduation (one in each of the above areas)

  12. Math MATH MATH 4 credits in the following are required for FRC graduation : • Algebra I, • Geometry, • Algebra II, • 4th Math Course- (aligned with post high school plans) (In rare instances, a student may be able to opt out of the above Math sequence.)

  13. Second Languages • No longer required for graduation for rising 9th graders but . . . • Minimum of 2 credits ARE required for admission to UNC System of Colleges • Students strong in Language or Math are encouraged to begin a second language in 9th grade

  14. Students in Advanced Spanish/French as 8th Graders Earn 1 unit of HS credit by successfully completing the course AND passing the placement exam Placement exam given in May, usually around EOG time Students who pass the course + pass the exam then have the OPTION of taking Spanish II/French II as a 9th Grader

  15. Arts • Students may receive Honors credit in no more than 2 courses in eachArts discipline (Visual, Dance, Theatre, Choral, Instrumental Music)

  16. Healthful Living • Students must pass Healthful Living I (or pass JROTC/HL I and II) • There are no “opt out” waivers for this requirement

  17. UNC System Admission Requirements • 6 credits in Language: 4 in English (A)& minimum of 2 in a second language (B) • 4 credits in Math••• Alg. I and II, Geom., and one credit beyond Alg. II: Alg. I and II, and two credits beyond Alg. II. *Recommended that prospective students take a Math credit in the 12th grade.

  18. UNC System cont. . . . . • 3 credits in Science –at least one in Life or Biological, at least one in Physical, and at least one laboratory course • 2 credits in Social Studies to include one credit in US History

  19. 9th Grade “Cores”: Math & Science Student A: In Math 8 and has consistently low performance → Foundations of Algebra (paired with Earth Science) Student B: In Math 8 and has a C test average → Introductory Mathematics (paired with Earth Science) Student C: In Math 8 or Math 8+ and has successfully mastered concepts → Algebra I (paired with Earth Science or Honors Earth Science) Student D: In Algebra I and has a C test average → Geometry(paired w/ Earth Science or Honors Earth Science) Student E: In Algebra I and has a B test average → Honors Geometry (paired with Honors Biology) Student F: In Geometry and has a B test average → Honors Algebra II(paired with Honors Biology)

  20. English/Social Studies All HS offer English I or Honors English I Some schools offer Paideia (English + World History or English + Civics & Economics). This is offered as average or Honors. Please note that if you don’t agree with a teacher’s recommendations, you have the right to waive them. Typically, students who waive a teacher’s recommendations are not as successful in the course.

  21. HS Registration Process at DMS! • 1) Ms. Rush will compile HS information in a registration folder for each student (by Feb 12th) • 2) Ms. Rush will present HS information in each Science class (Feb 15-Morris, Feb 18-Lancaster, Feb 19-Chit-Khin, Feb 23-Steger) • 3) During that same lesson, the students will use information in their registration folder to complete a rough draft (in pencil) of their 4 year plan…students will return folders to Ms. Rush • 4) Teachers will finalize their HS recommendations (by Feb 22)

  22. HS Registration Process 6) Teacher recommendations will be added to the students’ registration folders • 7) Students will bring their registration packets home (on Feb 26) • 8) Parents will work with students on finalizing 4 year plans and sign the planswhen completed • 9) All students will register for HS in the Daniels computer lab, completed 4 year plans due (begin in the lab on 3/11 and finish on 3/28) • 10) Students will bring home print-out of their course selections the same day that they register

  23. Registration Folder Contents • Copy of student’s notes from CG lesson • Copy of teacher recommendations • Student’s 4 year/graduation plan • Rising 9th Grade course list for your student’s base high school • Rising 9th Grade course list for any high schools for which you want to complete a transfer application • Any other pertinent information from the HS

  24. Important Steps • Help your student complete the 4 year/graduation plan • Please make sure that your student has recorded correctly all of their 9th Grade courses on the 4 year/graduation plan (they’ll register for HS using this information when in the computer lab) • If you plan to fill out a transfer and/or Magnet application, call/email Ms. Rush by Monday, Feb 22ndwith the names of the schools to which you’ll apply

  25. Important Steps (continued) • Attend Open House events with your student at his/her base school • Listen to Dr. Battle’s weekly message for updates re: High School Registration • Check the High School Registration link on the Daniels homepage often • Pester your student for his/her registration materials if you have not seen them by the end of February! 

  26. Important Events Monday, March 8th - 8-11AM: Drop-in hours for parents at Daniels with Broughton and Sanderson. Thursday, March 11th - 1:30-3:30 PM: Drop-in hours for parents in the BHS Guidance office. Friday, April 23 – 7:30AM – Parent workshop at Daniels media center: “Transition to High School” with Sue Glover. This workshop is for all parents of rising 9th graders.
