  1. Unit Portfolio Presentation Michelle Halverstadt Among the Hidden: Twenty and Ten

  2. Unit Summary • Students will read Twenty and Ten. They will keep a daily reading log and/or blog to answer thought provoking questions regarding the daily reading. Discussion will center on topics that are either teacher directed or student directed. Students will watch the movie Miracle at Moreaux and then complete a writing assignment based on a prompt of their choice. Students will also complete a differentiated presentation regarding the Avenue of the Righteous at Yad Vashem.

Unit Questions • How do we connect our human experience to literature (from the past)? Content Questions • Are you responsible for your own behavior? • Have you ever had to put yourself in danger to protect someone else?

This project will help my students develop 21st Century Skills by developing: Critical Thinking and Problem Solving • Exercising sound reasoning in understanding • Making complex choices and decisions • Understanding the interconnections among systems • Identifying and asking significant questions that clarify various points of view and lead to better solutions Communication and Collaboration • Articulating thoughts and ideas clearly and effectively through speaking and writing

  6. My Goals for the Course • Actively engage my students in 21stCentury Skills in a limited amount of time • Actively engage my students in reading a novel about the past and relating it to current events • Learn about and implement current technology • Share ideas with other teachers

  7. Goals for My Students • To increase reading fluency which directly impacts reading comprehension and decoding • To engage in “real” literature that makes real world connections

  8. Reflection • Stretched my teaching to help students understand the story without paraphrasing and summarizing it for them (Go with the Flow (map)… • Delved into additional ways to engage gifted and talented students
