  1. Bellwork (-8)2 = 64 2. √81= 9 3. 63 = 216 4. √12= 2√3

  2. Agenda: Bellwork I Need Help Objective Notes Discussion Practice Reflection

  3. I need help!!! My son is starting Baseball for the season. His coach has positioned him at second base. He was able to make the throw to first with no problem, but couldn’t quite get it to home plate. Why do you think he can’t make it to home plate, and what should he do about it?

  4. This is a baseball diamond. Can you draw paths to the two places he will throw. Include a line for the path from home to 1st

  5. The red lines show a right triangle

  6. The hypotenuse is the longest side and is across from the right angle Either leg can be labeled a or b and they form the right angle What is a right triangle? a triangle with a 90degree angle How do you know that this triangle is a right triangle? The box in the corner indicates a right angle What other way could you tell that this triangle is a right triangle? If it has 90◦ in the same corner or if they tell you that it is a right triangle or if the two legs are perpendicular Hypotenuse C Leg A Can you identify the parts? see diagram Remember any formulas that involve right triangles? Pythagorean theorem Leg B

  7. Objective:TLW apply the Pythagorean theorem to solve for a missing side of a right triangle

  8. Pythagorean Theorem a2 + b2 = c2 • The sum of the squares of the two legs of a right triangle is equal to the square of the third side

  9. 45 ft 45 ft

  10. How far does the ball have to go for him to make his throw to home plate? Lets look at what we had on the diamond. Both the legs A and B are 45 feet long. They are the legs because they form the right angle. The length we need is across from the right angle. That is the Hypotenuse C. a2 + b2 = c2 452 + 452 = c2 2025 + 2025 = c2 4050 = c2 √4050 = c 63.6 = c so he has to throw almost 64 feet to make it to home plate

  11. The Left Centerfielder is 75 feet away from the 1st baseman. He needs to throw to his cutoff man to make a play at Home. What is the length of the throw that he will have to make?

  12. Practice: Page 202 of the book problems 1-16

  13. Complete the following triangle and label the sides with the appropriate names Reflect
