  1. Geology

  2. Larva • Scientist gets too close to Lava –youtube

  3. Hokey Pokey Recipe • 5 TBS sugar • 2 TBS golden syrup • 1 tsp baking soda • Bring sugar and golden syrup to the boil slowly stirring all the time. • After it starts to foam up, simmer gently over a very low heat for 4 minutes, stirring occasionally and still watching it carefully. • Remove from heat and add baking soda quickly until it foams up • Pour at once into baking paper.

  4. Lava structure? • What is it about the structure of lava that is quite unique? • How is the hokey pokey structure the same?

  5. Igneous Rocks • Igneous (Ignite) – ig·ne·ous Adjective: 1)(of rock) Having solidified from lava or magma. • 2)Relating to or involving volcanic processes: "igneous activity". • Igneous … think ignite … think fire … think lava or magna

  6. Igneous Rocks • Igneous rocks are formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava. • Igneous rocks may form either below the surface as intrusive (plutonic) rocks or on the surface as extrusive (volcanic) rocks.

  7. What is the difference between magma and lava? • Magma is the molten material beneath the Earth's crust. This material consists of rock, gases, and mineral • The temperature of the magma can be as high as 5000 degrees. • Lava is the molten rock that comes out of a volcano or from a crack in Earth's surface. The molten rock comes from the underground magma. • Lava is just magma that has broken through Earth's surface.

  8. Activity Crust – 5-50 kms Mantle – 2900 kms Outer core – 2250 kms Inner core – 1200 kms Mt Everest – 8.4 kms • Draw the structure of the earths core. • Show the magma • An example of lava • The Earths crust • The Earths inner and outer core. • Extra challenge …. Can you draw it to scale!

  9. Examples • Crust – 5-50 kms • Mantle – 2900 kms • Outer core – 2250 kms • Inner core – 1200 kms • Mt Everest – 8.4 kms

  10. The rock cycle

  11. The rock cycle again

  12. Clips on the rock cycle • Rock Cycle Song • Song of the rocks- !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! • For those who like Bil Nye – you tube on rocks
