CSU Provides System Access to No- and Low-Cost Textbook Alternatives • Open Textbooks: Over 2,200 FREE online textbooks are available through the AL$ website & MORE… • CSU Library eBooks: CSU systemwide electronic library collections provide students FREE access to eBooks • Faculty-Authored Materials: Published and distributed in a variety of ways • Lower Cost Publisher eTextbooks: Digital rentals in the CSU

  5. About Digital Textbooks in the CSU • Digital textbooks cost 45%-55% less than new print textbook prices • 33% of CSU students prefer digital textbooks • 1% of all titles sold in CSU bookstores are digital textbooks There is an unmet demand in the marketplace

Digital Rentals: Here’s the Deal • Agreement on 4 key areas: • Choice: Faculty have a wide choice of publishers and Students can choose a digital rental or not • Price: 60% off new print textbook prices and publishers choose the titles they will offer • Marketing: CSU and vendors will collaborate on raising awareness, comfort, and competencies in using digital textbooks • Accessibility: Vendors will provide the CSU a roadmap for improving the accessibility of their eReaders

ALI Efforts and Outcomes @ Cal Poly Pomona • Our beginnings… continued • Shared information about ALI with faculty and showcased various ways they can participate • Contacted faculty who were already utilizing the ALI principles (providing high quality, affordable course materials to students) and inviting them to join our “featured faculty” • Helped faculty to locate high quality, affordable course materials for upcoming courses • Contacted Deans and Department Chairs with praise for their faculty participation

ALI Efforts and Outcomes @ Cal Poly Pomona • Where we are now – What we’ve accomplished • Website went live as planned on September 13, 2011 • Over 65 faculty participating in our “featured faculty” program where their efforts are showcased • A couple of faculty has contacted us to ask if they can become a “featured faculty” • Congratulations emails sent to deans and department chairs regarding their faculty participation in ALI

  18. Faculty Comments Dr. Bonny Burns-Whitmore is assisting her students in the struggle to find affordable texts. How? By using an ebook for her graduate class and taking advantage of Blackboard to post lab manuals for her undergraduate classes. Not only is Dr. Burns-Whitmore helping her students save money on the cost of textbooks, but her approach is also increasing their success in learning. Human Nutrition & Food Science

  19. Faculty Comments Dr. Renford Reese states, “This is exactly what I do for my students, provide them with “Affordable Learning Solutions”. I do this primarily through giving them access to ebooks, creating class packs, and guiding them to external internet links. I also provide an array of alternative learning materials on my website…My aim is to give students access to a wealth of free academic content. In this day of shrinking budgets and increased tuition, students desperately need “Affordable Learning Solutions.” Political Science

  20. Faculty Comments Dr. Richard Hyslop looks for ways to help his students deal with the high cost of textbooks. He uses an ebook that is completely free and is provided by FEMA. Dr. Hyslop explains how his “students will not have to pay a cent for texts next quarter.” Geography & Anthropology

  21. Faculty Comments Dr. Henry Co has gone out of his way to provide his students with more access to affordable texts. He has connected his students to websites where they can legally download free textbooks. “The students are happy” says Dr. Co. Technology & Operations Management

ALI Efforts and Outcomes @ Cal Poly Pomona • Important things to remember • A large part of this program is to make faculty aware of the various services available to help them find or developed high quality and affordable course materials • We’re here to facilitate what many of them are already doing • We’re offering a gift not a burden • There’s plenty of help out there • Have fun and continue to build great relationships!
