New Technology in the North • Clipper Ships- “clipped” time off sea trips because they were so quick! • Locomotives and canals- made overland travel easier, quicker, and cheaper! • Telegraph and Morse Code-people could instantly communicate over long distances! • Steam Engine-used to make locomotives and steamboats move quicker

  8. Southern Environment • Climate – warm/hot summers, mild winters • Geography – hilly, fertile land

  9. Southern Economy • Plantation economy- large farms which produced cotton, sugar, indigo, and tobacco. • Cotton gin increased demand for enslaved labor. • Used enslaved people to farm the land and work in the large plantation homes • Few Railroads and industries because farming was so profitable • Population in the South consisted of: • Poor farmers • Wealthy plantation owners • Enslaved people

  10. Overview • North is Industrial (factories) • South is Agricultural (farms) • Culture (way of life) for those who live in the North (city life) or South (farm life) is very different from one another. • Keep in mind that there were farms in the north and cities in the south, but for a majority of the population, life was very different between the two regions.
