  3. Obligation-Responsibility - Reasonable Care • Reasonable Care • Conforming to the standard operating procedures and regulations of the profession • Fulfilling the basic responsibilities of the job as defined by the terms of employment • Doing no more, nor no less, than a competitor

  4. Obligation-Responsibility - Reasonable Care • Reasonable Care • Is it enough? • Could more be done? • Should more be done? • Legal issues?

  5. Obligation-Responsibility - Good Works • Going ‘above and beyond’ • Doing ‘random acts of kindness’ • Extending beyond reasonable care • Going beyond ‘basic duties’ • Not always appreciated or encouraged

  6. Obligation-Responsibility - Virtues • Acquiring the wisdom to know when to stick with reasonable care, and when to push forward with good works • Knowing when to continue to push, and when to pull back • Engineers exhibit: honesty, fair-mindedness, reliability and integrity - adding benevolence, perseverance and public-spiritedness

  7. Blame-Responsibility - Causation • Physical causes • Why? What? How? • Organizational causes • Cause? • Moral agents? • Individual responsibilities • Intentionally • Recklessly • Negligently

  8. Blame-Responsibility - Individual Causation • Intentional Knowingly and deliberately • Reckless Being aware harm may result, but ignoring it • Negligent Failing to exercise due care

  9. Role-Responsibility • By virtue of position Boss, supervisor, manager, director • Earns a share in the responsibility • Shares both obligations and blame

  10. Impediments to Responsible Actions • Self interest Looking out for number one • Fear Bad consequences • Self-deception Rationalization • Ignorance Lack of vital knowledge

  11. Impediments to Responsible Actions • Egocentric tendencies Limited perspective • Microscopic vision Focusing only on problem at hand • Uncritical Acceptance of Authority He/she’s the Boss/Expert • Groupthink Coming to agreement without questioning
