  1. GPHS Cheerleader Tryouts INFORMATIONAL MEETING For CANDIDATES and Parents Please read constitution for all details

  2. WHAT IS EXPECTED OF A GPHS CHEERLEADER? SCHOOL SPIRIT DEDICATION and commitment Hard work Be a positive role model Represent our school and community

  3. ELIGIBILITY- grades, attendance and behavior Must have an 80 overall fall average No more than 6 absences/class in Fall No more than 1 ISS OR SUSPENSION

  4. BASIC INFORMATION REQUIREMENTS Must be enrolled at GPHS (to be eligible for Varsity) or live in GPISD (to be eligible for JV) Understand and be able to meet financial costs ($700 to $1000) Attend parent meeting Turn in all required paperwork Get a physical* Attend the clinic Tryout * must have before clinic to participate

  5. TIMELINE • Feb 8 Parent Meeting • Feb. 20 All required paperwork due • Feb. 28 First week of Clinic • Feb. 29 Last day to turn in spirit packets and letters • March 7 Last clinic date • March 8 Mock Tryouts • March 9 Actual Tryouts • March 20 First meeting of new Squads

REQUIRED PAPERWORK • Constitution Agreement • Cheerleading Tryout Agreement • Intent to try out for Varsity (not for freshmen) • Emergency Information Form • Medical Treatment Authorization • Physical Evaluation (completed by parent) • Physical Exam- a copy or a new one • Acknowledgement of UIL Rules • Consent for Medical Treatment (card)

  7. SCORING JUDGES (60%) CITIZENSHIP (40%) Qualified judges will be selected from Universal Cheerleading Association Judges scores will count for 60% of final score Candidates must score at least 150 pts( 50% of max. judges score) to be eligible Each Candidate MUST turn in 2 letters of recommendation from a fall semester teacher Letters count 95 pts Spirit Pack counts 5 pts This score will count 40% of final score

JUDGES SCORE SHEET CHEERLEADERS MASCOTS Group Cheer 20 pts Dance* 20 pts Projection and Spirit 10 pts Entrance series 10 pts Individual cheer 20 pts Standing Back 10 pts Jumps 10 pts *males will stunt Interview 20pts Originality 20 pts Improv. 20pts Crowd Appeal 20 pts Character Development 20 pts

CITIZENSHIP SCORING Letters of Recommendation Spirit Packets 95 points Each candidate turns in two letters, they are not evaluated or judged Failure to turn in 2 letters will result in candidate not trying out 5 points Packet consists of pep rally ideas and posters 5 pep rally ideas 2 spirit posters No partial scores given

  10. Citizenship Deductions 2 points for each tardy 5 Points for each Disciplinary Referral (not resulting in ISS) 20 points for an ISS assignment

CHEER CLINIC Attendance is required (1 ab allowed) Candidates will be taught cheers/dance Clinic is closed to public NO video taping of candidates Dvd of material will be available at first clinic date for $10..Orders can be done tonight Candidates may not participate until they have provided a physical -Can be turned in after Feb. 20th

  12. MOCK TRYOUTS Held to familiarize candidates with the tryout process. Optional for current Varsity Cheerleaders MANDATORY for all other candidates • Candidates will come in same attire as for real tryouts • The process will be as close to actual tryouts as possible • Candidates will be given a evaluation sheet from Senior Cheerleaders • Mock tryouts will be closed to the public

  13. ACTUAL TRYOUTS CLOSED TO PUBLIC Candidates will draw for numbers during the clinic. Candidates will meet in the turf room, get numbers, stretch, and get ready. Candidates may NOT be checked out of school prior to tryouts. • Candidates come into the gym in groups of 3 • The group performs the group cheer and the dance together • Candidates move to the side of the gym and in number order they perform their individual portions. • Entrance series tumbling • Individual Cheer • Standing Back handspring (no mat; no spotter) • Jumps (2) • Male candidates will be judged on stunting rather than dance • The group then exits the gym

  14. AFTER TRYING OUT Candidates must stay in turf room or return to class until 3:35 Judges will complete scoring, tabulators will total, scores will be entered Results will be posted by 6:00 Individual scores can be picked up by candidate or parent on Tuesday after Spring Break

  15. IF SELECTED New Squad meeting March 20th at 5:00 Check for Camp ($350.00) will be due Camp will be at University of Texas-Austin June 4-7
