  3. Presented to, Dr. Ing. Naved Ramzan • Presented by, Adila Anbreen 2007-chem-01 INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTATION

  4. Instruments Instruments are devices used for measuring and monitoring process conditions for purpose of • Plant safety • Controlling product quality INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTATION

  5. Instruments are used for • Transmission • Control • Measurement of any variable INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTATION

  6. Why we need instruments? • Steady state assumption not observed in processes • Plant can continue to operate safely, efficiently, and profitably regardless of what upsets occur. INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTATION

  7. Variables to be measured • Pressure • Temperature • Level • Flow • Compositions INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTATION

  8. Flowsheets • Process flowsheets • Mechanical flowsheets (P&IDs) INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTATION

  9. P&IDs • Process equipment, valves, instruments and pipe lines are tagged with unique identification codes INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTATION

  10. P&IDs provide more detail than a process flow diagram with the exception of the parameters, i.e. temperature, pressure, and flow values. • Use specific symbols to show the connectivity of equipment, sensors, and valves in a control system. INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTATION

  11. List of P&ID items • Instrumentation and designations • Mechanical equipment with names and numbers • All valves and their identifications • Process piping and identification • Flow directions • Computer control system input • Identification of components and subsystems delivered by others INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTATION

  12. Instrumentation Symbols • A list of symbols to help the designer in representation of control and instrumentation schemes has been standardized • A list of control and instrumentation symbols is provided below INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTATION

  13. Variable Symbols INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTATION

  14. Function Symbols INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTATION

  15. Instrument’s function • Discrete instruments • Shared display/ shared control • Computer function • Programmable logic control INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTATION

  16. INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTATION

  17. Instrument Tag information INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTATION

  18. INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTATION

  19. INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTATION

  20. INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTATION

  21. Valve Types INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTATION

  22. Types of valve operators INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTATION
