PhD 38 Grad Course Credits 24 Thesis Credits • Minimum of 18 ME grad course credits [5000 and 8000 level) (A/F) • Maximum of 20 other grad science/technology credits (A/F)- may include 12 credits in a designated minor • Minimum of 12 8000-level credits (A/F) • Research Ethics & Professional Conduct, 3 credit max. (S/N) • 2-3 Seminar Credits (S/N) • Course selection MUST be approved by Adviser and DGS via Degree Program Form • Min. GPA of 3.00 • ME 8888 can only be taken after passing the Preliminary Exam which consists of a written research proposal and oral defense. • Register as soon as you are eligible.

PhD Transfer • A minimum of 12 graduate course credits taken at UMN. • The number of course credits that can be transferred from another university will be determined on a case-by-case basis and must be approved by the adviser and DGS. • Doctoral thesis or any other type of research credits earned at another university cannot be applied toward the thesis credit requirement. • A thesis done at another university cannot be transferred to the University of Minnesota. • A maximum of 12 graduate course credits taken as a non-degree or non-admitted student may be considered for inclusion in the course program once the student is enrolled in the graduate program.

MS with research (Plan A) 10 Thesis Credits 20 Grad Course Credits • Min. of 14 ME grad course credits [5000 and 8000 level) (A/F) • Max. of 6 other grad science/technology credits (A/F)-may be taken as a designated minor • No more than six approved 4000-level course credits • Research Ethics & Professional Conduct (S/N) • 1-2 Seminar Credits (S/N) • Course selection MUST be approved by Adviser and DGS via Degree Program Form • GPA of 2.80 or higher • 60% or more of courses taken at UMN • ME 8777 may be taken at any time during the degree program. • Register to fill your allowed credits.

MS with project (Plan B) Project Credits 30 Grad Course Credits • Min. of 14 ME grad course credits [5000 and 8000 level) (A/F) • Max. of 6 other grad science/technology credits (A/F)-may be taken as a designated minor • No more than six approved 4000-level course credits • Research Ethics & Professional Conduct (S/N) • 1-2 Seminar Credits (S/N) • Course selection must be approved by Adviser and DGS via Degree Program Form • GPA of 2.80 or higher • 60% or more of courses taken at UMN • 4 Plan B Project credits selected from ME 8794 or ME 8951 and taken on an S/N grade basis. These count toward 30 credit requirement. • No credit for independent study courses beyond project credits.

MS course work only (Plan C) 30 Grad Course Credits • Min. of 24 ME grad course credits [5000 and 8000 level) (A/F) • Max. of 6 other grad science/technology credits (A/F)-may be taken as a designated minor • No more than six approved 4000-level course credits • Research Ethics & Professional Conduct (S/N) • No more than 4 credits of independent study (ME 8794) taken on an S/N grade basis. • 1-2 Seminar Credits (S/N) • Course selection MUST be approved by Adviser and DGS via Degree Program Form • GPA of 2.80 or higher • 60% or more of courses taken at UMN

  12. Submit form with DGS assistant in ME 1120 for DGS signature, once form is complete • Committee must be submitted online before submitting Degree Program form

  13. Doctoral Exams See Handbook 1. Oral Qualifying Exam • 1st semester if you have an M.S. in ME • 2rd semester otherwise • Info session in September TBA 2. Written Preliminary Exam • Ph.D. thesis proposal (see handbook for format) • 2 semesters after the qualifying exam 3. Checklist • Choose an adviser  as soon as possible • File approved program of study  due after 1st semester or 10 credits for MS students  due 2nd semester for PhD students • Qualifying & Preliminary exams (PhD students)  take oral qualifying exam by end of 1st semester (for MSME) or 2rd semester (for non-MSME)  take written prelim exam by end of 3rd semester (for MSME) or 4th semester (for non-MSME)  take oral prelim exam within semester of passing written exam University of Minnesota Driven to Discover
