Nuvet Labs |The New Age of Pet Grooming: Alternative Styles & Trims

Most pet parents take their pooch to the groomer and order a standard puppy cut, or a breed-specific haircut, and leave it at that. A good groomer will know exactly what you are referring to. However, there are some great alternative haircuts making the rounds on dogs of all breeds and sizes. If you are tired of the same style on your dog, the following cuts might help you and your dog get out of the hair style rut.

  2. NuVet Labs | The New Age of Pet Grooming: Alternative Styles & Trims • Most pet parents take their pooch to the groomer and order a standard puppy cut, or a breed-specific haircut, and leave it at that. • A good groomer will know exactly what you are referring to. However, there are some great alternative haircuts making the rounds on dogs of all breeds and sizes. • If you are tired of the same style on your dog, the following cuts might help you and your dog get out of the hair style rut.

  3. NuVet Labs | The New Age of Pet Grooming: Alternative Styles & Trims Clean and Simple Cut • If your dog is a rowdy puppy, you may wish to shy away from a breed-specific cut in favor of a pared-down summer cut, also known as a hygiene cut. • This will keep your dog clean. Likewise, if your dog is getting up in years, he may have a hard time taking care of his own hygiene, and a clean cut is best. This cut is very low maintenance. • Simply have your groomer cut the fur short, and remove beards, eyebrows, skirts and other fur areas that make some breeds stand out. Be sure to have your groomer trim the paws, as well.

  4. NuVet Labs | The New Age of Pet Grooming: Alternative Styles & Trims Lion Cut • This is another cut that is gaining popularity. With this cut, the body of your dog is closely trimmed. • The face is left full and fluffy, to give the appearance of a lion. The paws and tail are also left. The cut is also known as a poodle cut. • This cut was largely breed-specific, but dog parents of many breeds are finding that it can be a cute look and also functional, especially during the hot summer months.

  5. NuVet Labs | The New Age of Pet Grooming: Alternative Styles & Trims Partial Cut • This is another style that is great for summer months. • With the partial cut, your dog’s fur will be trimmed at the inner thighs, under his armpits, around his behind and under his tail. • The rest of his fur will be left alone. This cut will also help keep your dog cool during the summer and makes hygiene a lot easier.

  6. NuVet Labs | The New Age of Pet Grooming: Alternative Styles & Trims Peekaboo Cut • With the peekaboo cut, most of your dog’s fur will be left. • The belly fur is shortened and blended up the sides into the fur on your dog’s back. • This still allows the appearance that your dog has his full coat, but cleans up the tummy area. • This helps your dog be cooler in the summer and stay cleaner with less matting on the belly fur.

  7. NuVet Labs | The New Age of Pet Grooming: Alternative Styles & Trims Non-Toxic Fur Dye • This trend is also becoming very popular among dog parents. Non-toxic fur dye can be purchased at most pet supply stores. • Your groomer may also offer this service. Smaller dogs, such as Yorkies and Poodle mixes, do well with fur dye, but it’s safe for all dogs. • You may wish to add some pink highlights to your dog’s face or tail, or add some red, white and blue streaks for the summer holidays. • The sky is the limit, and this dye washes out easily, so you can change your dog’s look often.

  8. NuVet Labs | The New Age of Pet Grooming: Alternative Styles & Trims Other Considerations • There are some breeds that should never be trimmed or shaved. Arctic breeds, such as the Siberian Husky and Alaskan Malamute are two of these breeds. • When you shave or trim the fur on these dogs, it damages the coat. In addition, the coat usually will never grow back properly. • This doesn’t mean you can’t do maintenance, however. • You should keep the fur between the paw pads and around the rear trimmed for cleanliness. Before you decide to shave or trim your dog’s coat, make sure he has the proper coat for a trim.

  9. NuVet Labs | The New Age of Pet Grooming: Alternative Styles & Trims • Still not sure what would look best on your dog? Talk to your groomer. A good groomer has lots of experience styling lots of different breeds, and will be able to help you choose the right cut for your dog. • Your groomer can make suggestions, and may also have pictures of other dogs to help you decide. You can also do a quick search of the internet to find pictures of what you want for your dog, to help your groomer out when you take your dog for his next appointment. • A good haircut is not only cute and fashionable; it also serves a purpose when it comes to hygiene, so it’s important to stay current on your dog’s grooming need
