  2. Course Information General Information: Students in this course should read the study guide carefully at the start of semester. It contains important information about the course. If anything in it is unclear, please consult the teaching staff on the course. Learners are expected to register for this course within the time frame specified on the student’s information board. available www.adejuwonmendra.wordpress.com.

  3. Introduction to the Course This is an online course that runs in the distance learning mode. It is a course opened to all students in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. It is a 3-credit course that will require 45 hours of interaction among teachers and learners for the period of the course. This course will help you access the employment opportunities, and grant you economic self reliance within the Yoruba cultural environment worldwide. It will also open up to you related sectors and cultures of the world. This is particularly relevant today since countries where we have the Yoruba Diaspora like Brazil and Cuba in the Americas, and the Republic of Benin, among others here in West Africa, require teachers of Yoruba language and culture all over their school systems.

  4. Aim The aim of this course is to introduce YOU to the various fields of Yoruba cultural life, history, religion, art, material culture, language, medicine and business opportunities in these provide in the various fields of human endeavour. Reason- ‘Amongst various definitions of culture, there is one particularly pertinent and it states that, ‘it is culture that gives man the ability to think and reflect about himself. It is culture that makes us uniquely human, rational, critical and ethically committed. In other words, when we talk about the culture of a people, we have in mind their belief system, habits, habitat, cuisine, mode of dressing, language, their works of art amongst many other things’ (Adeniran, 2012).

  5. Learning Objectives of this Course At the end of this course learners are expected to have gotten a good knowledge of the CDL Yoruba Cultural Studies Syllabus, and will be able to; 1. identify Yoruba cultural life and knowledge 2. Discuss the trends of Yoruba cultural life and performances, their relevance to national economic development in Nigeria and West Africa. 3. Enumerate the constraints to the development of the culture in Nigeria and elsewhere. 4. Discuss the major cultural policies, programme efforts and their impacts on Nigeria and world. 5. Discuss Yoruba cultural conservation in Nigeria, Africa and the world.

  6. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course will cover the curriculum topics such as the History , Etymology, pedagogy, Language, Literature and Film, Religion , Natural Resources, The Heritage-Art, Medicine, Indigenous Technologies and Social Networks. The special field of Ifa literary corpus and its importance to traditional Yoruba life, problem and conflicts resolution will enjoy particular emphasis. At the end of the course, your understanding and critical horizon of Yoruba culture are expected to be widened and sharpened.

  7. The Diploma in Yoruba Cultural Studies Programme includes Museum Studies, and combines scientific and arts education with transmission of experience in museum studies. It emphasizes exposure to museum practiceand specialty areas of particular interest to most national, state and regional museums. For this O.A.U has a high reputation: Nigerian history, Ancient history, Art and Antiquity heritage identification and dating, early childhood and indigenous studies. No university within Nigeria offers such an undergraduate program.

  8. Yoruba Music and Dance, Yoruba Textile and Fashion shall also constitute important modules of the syllabus.

  9. EXAMINATION • This Syllabus and the preceding study guide provide an in-depth knowledge needed by learners to successfully take the final examination. Learners are encouraged to read and understand the entire content for good performance in the course. • Learners should make use of the supplemental CDs provided as this will expand knowledge. • Learners should note that the sample questions and practice tests provided at the end of each lecture will help learners to assess self and promote revision before the final examination. • Suggested readings will also enhance learner’s performance in the final examination.
