  1. Peat A Novel Ecological Building Material

  2. Peatboard • Peat has been used as a fuel in generating heat and power for many years • Now it has become a green building material • As an ecological alternative to particle board

  3. Peat is formed from plant matter that accumulates in wetland areas over thousands of years. • New peat is constantly accumulating in Finland and many other parts of the world. • Although extensively harvested in Finland, more new peat is accumulated annually than is harvested

  4. Peat Harvesting

  5. Harvesters

  6. Many Excellent Properties • Peatboard is produced exclusively from natural materials: peat, flax fibres, and starch used as a binding agent • No chemicals to outgas like in particleboard

  7. Peat is first harvested, dried, and screened to ensure that the granules are of the optimal size, before being heated and compressed to form finished board. • Peatboard can be machined and fixed using nails and screws, and can be easily painted and papered. In addition, peatboard 'breathes' and has good acoustic properties.

  8. Safe for the Environment • A natural product that is absent of toxic agents • At the end of its life can be disposed of by composting, burning for fuel, or grinding up to be returned to the earth • Peatboard was selected as Finland's best ecological product in 2001

  9. Availability • Peatboard was developed by Finn-Peat RHM in association with the National Technology Agency of Finland • It was tested by the Technical Research Centre of Finland and is not yet currently available to consumers Source: http://www.hightechfinland.com/2003/newmaterialsprocess/materials/finnpeat.html
