  14. VDI & IOPS Challenges

  15. VDI Storage is Different Compared to a PC • Virtual desktops use a virtualized hard drive that requires underlying storage to be: • Consistent – What written is what is read back • Available – Ability to read/write all the time, any time • High Performance – Ability to drive IOPS to demanding Windows desktops and operations • Windows VMs are I/O hungry and require a significant amount of performance

  16. 140 desktop aggregate read and write IOPS VDI load test chart 80% Writes 20% Reads Read IO Write IO

  17. Windows and Shared Storage issues • Windows built for “real” not virtual • Windows has many optimizations for PCs that run on spinning media • Optimizations use I/O capacity because Windows is unaware that its storage is virtualized • Windows storage optimizations that hurt VDI • Moves data to “outer lying sectors” to reduce access latency • Re-orders files on disk layout to make files contiguous • Does not “zero” deleted blocks – only marks as deleted (breaks TP/linked clones) • Blocks Applications/GUI if outstanding I/O queue depth gets saturated • Read ahead is implemented as block ranges and not file-system inode traversal - penalizes virtualization workload • Virtual Memory is a big overhead • Interactive workloads have erratic virtual memory utilization • Windows will page memory/disk regardless of the amount of RAM given to OS • Page faults decrease application performance by 1330X compared to if data was in memory • How IOPS are Used in Windows Desktops

  18. How many IOPS do you really need? Desktop Virtualization Desktop PC Ultrabook with SSD ? SSD ~5000 IOPS 7200 RPM HDD ~75 IOPS How fast is fast enough?

  19. IOPS Consumed by a Single Desktop VM Word ~950 IOPS Excel ~3700 IOPS Windows Update ~4000 IOPS Chrome ~3200 IOPS Acrobat ~1100 IOPS Visio ~2300 IOPS Win 7 Idle ~2000 IOPS Anti-Virus ~800 IOPS IE 9 ~1250 IOPS PowerPoint ~1100 IOPS Outlook 975 IOPS Firefox ~800 IOPS

  20. Atlantis ILIO 4.1 Technology Under The Covers • Next generation persistent ILIO technology leverages RAM to offload storage Storage To Persist VMs States Atlantis ILIO VM IO Processing Inline De-duplication Compression IO Blender Fix Fast Replication Application Analysis • Uses much less storage in deployment • Storage maintains copy of VM state only • Leverages more RAM for more processing and IOPS • Delivers great performance with fraction of storage previously needed Hypervisor RAM as Primary Storage RAM as Primary VM Storage

  22. ILIO Architecture

  23. Persistent vs. Stateless Virtual Desktops Persistent Desktops Stateless Desktops (Floating) 70% of the VDI Market is Persistent UserProfile + OS Virtual Apps Stateless30% Easiest 1st Step into VDI Challenging for large enterprise • Same image used as PC image • Same processes for updates, patching • Same teams – no reorg required • Problem: very costly to deploy with PC-like user experience without ILIO • Rebuild images • Operational model changes • Persona implementation • App virtualization issues Persistent70% • Economically feasible with Atlantis ILIO Migration can be time consuming for enterprises

  24. Preferred Deployment Architectures • Atlantis ILIO for Persistent with SAN • ILIO Diskless VDI for Stateless Hypervisor Hypervisor Hypervisor Hypervisor Hypervisor Hypervisor Hypervisor Hypervisor ILIO ILIO ILIO ILIO ILIO ILIO ILIO ILIO RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM SAN/NAS (for storing persistent VM/user data) DAS/SAN/NAS (for storing Snapclone configuration)

  25. Atlantis ILIO Diskless VDI using RAM • RAM allocated to ILIO Virtual machine • ILIO uses 6GB of RAM for application and remaining for storing de-duplicated VM Data • ILIO uses an internal RAM block device driver to create a RAM disk • ILIO creates an ILIO file system on that RAM disk • ILIO exports the ILIO File System as NFS, or a block device on the file system as iSCSI

  26. ILIO Architecture for Non Persistent VDI workloads • ILIO Diskless VDI for Stateless Virtualized Hosts use RAM as Storage to Serve VMs Locally Shared Storage (Gold State is restored on reboot)

  27. Atlantis ILIO Next Generation Persistent Architecture • Replication Host is an ILIO VM configured to handle all traffic to SAN/NAS storage and minimize amount of backup/recovery IO • Replication Host ILIO VM does not need a dedicated physical server • ILIO Fast Replication sends virtual desktop states out-of-band Minimal SAN/NAS/SSD ILIO Fast Replication Replication Host Virtual Desktops Use Local Memory as Primary Storage * Actual number will vary based on image size, number of desktops, server configuration, and actual implementation choices

  28. Atlantis ILIO Next Generation Persistent Architecture • Leverage Hypervisor HA for automated recovery of desktops • Works with N+1 configuration • For recovering failed Session and Replication servers Minimal SAN/NAS/SSD ILIO Fast Replication Replication Host Replication Host Standby Host Virtual Desktops Use Local Memory as Primary Storage
