  4. What is Initiative for Research & Innovation in Science Fair? (IRIS) • A platform for school children to display scientific aptitude through research based projects and an opportunity to win recognition and awards at a National and International level • The Department of Science & Technology (DST), Intel and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), have joined hands to promote and nurture inventions & innovations among students. • It is affiliated to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) which is held in USA and IEYI (International Exhibition for Young Inventors) held in various countries every year by CII.

  5. Key Objectives • IRIS wants to stimulate young minds to take an active interest in science and technology • To encourage students to use research as a tool for creating new knowledge Building a strong scientific temper

What is Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF)? • Intel ISEF is the largest science competition for pre-college students held every year in USA • Today Intel ISEF gets participation from over 50 countries with prizes over $ 4 million • In 2008 Team India has won 8 awards, 4 Grand awards, 2 Organizational awards and 2 Governmental awards at Intel ISEF 2008, Atlanta, GA, USA

  7. India’s Performance at Intel ISEF • IRIS is participating in Intel ISEF since 1999 • Each year the contingent has come back with many accolades

  9. Participation Categories • Category I: 5th – 8th Std. • Category II: 9th – 12th Std. ( Competes for participation at ISEF)

  10. IRIS Participation Form Participation Category Age/Participation category should be chosen on the basis of the class in which the student is in. 5th to 8th std: Category 1 9th to 12th std: Category 2

Participation Details for IRIS • Students • Individually or in Team of 2 • Students compete in 10 subject categories: • Bio-chemistry, Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Science / Space Science, Environmental Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Zoology • Entries to IRIS come through two routes: • Direct entry – students/ schools directly send the science projects to participate at IRIS • Affiliated fairs entry – winning projects of Affiliated fairs that meet IRIS judging criteria are selected and sent by the Affiliated fairs

  12. IRIS Participation Form Individual or team Students can either participate as an individual or as a team. A team can consist of only two members.

Participation Details for IRIS Entry level: • Students Handbook is sent/ distributed to the interested schools/ students • Participation forms can also be downloaded from the website: http://www.educationinindia.net/iris/ http://www.intel.com/cd/corporate/education/APAC/ENG/in/math/IRIS/241530.htm • Students select 1 of the 10 subject categories • Submit the Project synopsis along with following forms before August 31st, 2008. • Students participation form • No Objection Certificate • Screening report

Synopses are evaluated by the Scientific Review Committee (SRC) comprising of eminent personalities from scientific community Scientists and senior academicians from renowned institutes like IIT, IISc, TIFR, BARC, HBCSE form the SRC SRC assess the Project Synopsis and the Screening report Synopsis evaluation

IRIS National Fair • Synopses short listed by the SRC along with the Affiliated • Fair winning projects compete at the National Fair • National Fair will be held in December • 4 individuals and 2 team projects will be selected at each National Fair as National winners of the Initiative for Research & Innovation Fair • 1 ‘Best of Subject Category award’ would be conferred to the best project in each subject category

  20. Coaching Camp • The 2 coaching camps are organized for the IRIS National Fair Winners to prepare students for Intel ISEF • Mock interviews, project improvements, communication and presentation skill etc are focused on at the Coaching Camp by a panel of scientists • Best 4 Individuals & 2 team projects will be chosen at the Coaching Camp and will form part of the contingent representing India at the Intel ISEF

  21. Timelines • Last date for submission of synopsis • 31st August • Intimation of results to participants • September last week • IRIS National Fair • December • Coaching Camp • January-April • Intel ISEF • May
