  2. What Is Sumo Wrestling? • Sumo is a Japanese form of wrestling and Japan’s National Sport. Sumo was created in Ancient Japan and was performed for the Shinto gods just for entertainment. Some ancient rituals are still performed today.

  3. The Rules Of the Sumo • The rules of the sumo are very simple. The first wrestler to touch the mat or leave the ring is out. Sumo matches don’t last long.. They usually last for about a couple of seconds. The longest would be one minute.

  4. SumoTournaments • Six sumo tournaments are held each year and they each last fifteen days. Three tournaments are held in Tokyo in the months of January, May, and September. One in Osaka (March), Nagoya (July), and Fukuoka (November).

  5. How Do Sumo Wrestlers Get So Big? • Sumo wrestlers eat a food called Chunk Nabe every day. It helps them to gain a lot of weight. It contains chicken, pork, steak, scallops, cabbage, Japanese leeks, bean sprouts, shiitake mushrooms, enoki-dake, shirataki noodles, dried konbu, bonito flakes, dashi broth soup, soy sauce, salt sake, mirin, eggs, cooked rice, and ponzu sauce.

  6. Why Do Sumo Wrestlers Wear Those Diaper Looking Underwear? • Those diaper looking underwear are actually called a mawashi. They are about 30 ft. and 2 ft. wide and weigh about 11 pounds. They come in many different colors and some superstitious wrestlers change the color of theirmawashi each tournament.
