  5. Harvest • Should snap right off • DO NOT let them get puffy! • Bring some stem with you! • For showing – UNIFORM! • Length • No curl! • Tip & Butt them • Blanch, Freeze • Pressure Canning

  6. Winter vs. Summer Squash • Hardy plants • Winter tend to VINE • Summer tend to BUSH • Winter produces what can flower (once) • Summer flowers SO MANY TIMES!

  8. Winter Squash • Plant in hills • Space them 2x3 or 3x4 feet apart • Plant in a 3x3 patch on the hill (9 seeds) • Thin out to about 4 or 5 plants • Responds well to fertilizer!

  10. Uses • Cooked – butter and brown sugar! • Soups • Gourds for Decorations • Painted Birdhouses • Stored at cool 50 degree temps – can last through a Nebraska winter (in our ‘heated’ garage’)

  12. Summer Squash • Plant same as winter squash • Also responds well to fertilizers

  13. Uses • Cooked – in casseroles • Deep-Fried • Grilled with olive oil & parmesan cheese

  15. Cucumbers • Plant the same as squash • Plant earlier, prefers warm weather but not super hot! • Recommended to fertilize!

  16. Uses • Plant pickling type for cucumbers! • Slice straights for pickling • Harvest smalls for dills • Salads • Soaps?
