  1. Boreal Forests of the Russian Federation, challenges and prioritiesNatalia Demidova, Federal Forest Service, Northern Research Institute of Forestry,ROME, 25.09.2012

  2. Sustainable forest management and "green economy" - is the only way for Russia's development, which is reflected in the document "About the basis of the state policy in the field of environmental development of the Russian Federation until 2030."

  3. The use of low-quality timber for energy production based on biofuels, deep processing of forest resources • Renewable energy (firewood, wood chips, sawdust, waste of wood processors)

  4. Distribution of the system of voluntary certification (FSC - forest stewardship council) • Growth rates of wooden housing construction in 2009 was 11.9%.

  5. Source of timber • Number of important ecosystem services: clean water, beautiful scenery, clean air • Regulating effect on the climate, • Important role in the global carbon cycle • Pristine natural area

  6. Use of wild berries and mushrooms is of great socio-economic importance for the rural population of taiga regions

  7. The greatest threats to the boreal forest: • Poaching • Illegal logging • Mining • Development of oil and natural gas reserves • Forest fires • Climate change • Radioactive and other pollution

  8. Position of the Rosleshoz • Improvement of the system of remote monitoring of spatial changes in boreal forests, caused by clear cutting • Studying the experience of the use of remote sensing

  9. Development a single methodology for inventory of boreal forest. • Identification of boreal forests ecosystem services, the development of their economic evaluation, the implementation of these estimates to the national and international practice.

  10. Development of legal arrangement on international level for ecosystem services assessment of boreal forests. • Evaluation and monitoring of the genetic diversity of Boreal forests - quantifying the genetic variability of the species and populations

  11. Harmonization of Boreal forest typology • Mapping of the spatial position of the boreal forest (borders, forest vegetation zones prevailing types of boreal forest ecoregions, etc.) • Development of the Model Forest Network in the boreal zone

  12. Carbon balance: the impact of climate change and the carbon budget modeling, bio-energy and biomass • Improvement of the methods of the carbon balance assessment in boreal forests

  13. Creation of integrated and improved technologies to protect the boreal forests from pests and diseases • Conduction of joint studies on evaluation of the most vulnerable sites of forest fires crossing the adjacent areas

  14. Evaluation and prediction of the behavior of forest fires in boreal forests • Development of the procedure for organizing the rapid exchange of information related to the liquidation forest fires in adjacent territories to prevent the transfer of fire to neighboring territories

  15. Creation of the initiative group to develop an action plan of cooperation between countries of the boreal zone with the mandate for 1 year. • Welcome to discuss those issues on the next meeting in Khanty-Mansiysk or Arkhangelsk (September 2013 ?)

  16. Thank you for your attention!
