  1. Values at St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary, Putney School Motto ‘Learning to love, loving to learn’

  2. Why teach values in school? • School community need principles which guide them • A moral framework within which we educate • One of the main aims is to help children grow in their faith, to make the most of every ability they have been given, to achieve academic excellence in school and to prepare well for adult life.

  3. Learning to love... Loving to learn... • Love encompasses all the other values • Once you know how to love others, you can feel happy and ready to love learning. • Loving to learn can be enjoying and achieving • Learning to love could be making a positive contribution to your day. • Love to learn about your talents, how to take responsibility for your actions (assertive discipline)

  4. Continued.. • Coping with feelings – give children ways to do this: wheels of emotion, place 2 be, reading corner. • Learning to love means following through your rights and responsibilities • This starts with modelling from all staff

  5. Explicit teaching of values Understanding Patience Faith Empathy Hope Appreciation Peace Unity Happiness Co-operation Courage There is a lot discover in each value – help children to think deeply. Matthew Lipman (American Philosopher) said ‘Children are natural philosophers, they view the world around them with curiosity and wonder’
