Gustar se usa para expresar “to like”/”to be pleasing”. • Me gusta el escenario. I like the scenery. • Te gustan las obras de teatro. You like plays. • Nos gusta ganar. We like to win.
Gustar y verbos similares usan los complementos indirectos. La forma de gustar está de acuerdo con el objeto. • Te gusta la fiesta. You like the party. • Te gustan las fiestas. You like the parties. • Nos gusta la canción. We like the song. • Nos gustan las canciones. We like the songs. • Note: Si lo que “gusta”es una acción (expresado por el infinitivo) se usa la tercera forma singular del verbo gustar. • Me gusta bailar. I like to dance.
Para clarificar los complementos indirectos le y les, o dar enfásis, necesitas usar la frase preposicional: • “A……+ le/les + forma de “gustar” … • A Tina no le gusta aplaudir. • Tina doesn’t like to applaud. • A los alumnos no les gustan los exámenes. The students don’t like exams. • A mí me gusta dormir. I like to sleep.
Otros verbos como Gustar • Encantar y Fascinar- to delight (Used for things that someone likes a lot or loves) • Me encantan los conciertos ---> I love concerts • Parecer- to seem • La película nos pareció corta --> The film seemed short to us • Note: Since parecer is usually followed by an adjective, the adjective must agree in number and gender with the item described
Otros Verbos • Aburrir- to bore • Te aburre la cantante. • The singer bores you. • Caer bien/ mal- to get along well/badly • Nos cae bien la profesora. • We get along well with the teacher. • Disgustar- to upset • Me disgusta el epectáculo. • The show upsets me.
Doler- to be painful, to cause sorrow • Te duele la cabeza. • Your head hurts. • Encantar- to like very much. • Me encanta el español. • I like Spanish very much.
Faltar- to be lacking, to need. • A Ramón le faltan cinco dólares. • Ramón lacks (needs) five dollars. • Fascinar-to fascinate • Te fascinan las obras de teatro. • Plays fascinate you.
Hacer falta- to miss • Me hace falta mi perrito. • I miss my dog. • Importar- to be important to, to matter • No me importa. • It is not impotant to me./I don’t care.
Quedar (a uno) to remain, to have left. • A Tito le queda un día de vacaciones. • Tito has one day of vacation left. • Interesar- to be interesting to, to interest • Nos interesa el estreno. • We are interested in the premiere.
Tocar- (a uno) to be one’s turn. • A ti te toca sacar la basura. • It’s your turn to take out the garbage. • Molestar- to bother, to annoy • Me molesta hacer cola. • It annoys me to wait in line.
Preocupar- to worry • A ellos les preocupa el campeonato. • They worry about the championship. • Sorprender- to surprise • Os sorprende el empate. • You (all) are surprised by the tie (game).
