Cancer • Based on rates from 2005-2007, 40.77% of men and women born today will be diagnosed with cancer of all sites at some time during their lifetime. • This number can also be expressed as 1 in 2 men and women will be diagnosed with some type of cancer during their lifetime. Heart Disease & Stroke • An estimated 82.6 Million Americans have some form of Cardiovascular disease (CVD) - (e.g., hypertension, CHD, stroke, etc…) • Over 1 in 3 adults has some form of CVD • On average someone has a stroke in the U.S. every 40 seconds Heart Disease & Stroke Statistics-2011 Update AHA

Heart Disease & Stroke • According to the 2009 Wyoming Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS)– 27.0% of Wyoming adults had 3 or more CVD Risk Factors (smoking, hypertension, high cholesterol, obesity, lack of physical activity, and diabetes) • 84.2% of Wyoming Adults had at least one risk factor • These are down from 28.4% and 86.1% in 2007

  15. Diabetes • As of 2010, 18.8 Million people in the U.S. had been diagnosed as having diabetes • Another 7.0 Million were undiagnosed • 1.9 Million new cases were diagnosed in people over 20 years old in 2007 CDC – National Diabetes Fact Sheet, 2011

  18. Diabetes • 1 in every 400-600 children has Type I diabetes • Type II is not just limited to adults anymore • Estimated that 45% of all new cases of Type II are being diagnosed in large Pediatric Centers (CSG-Trends Alert 2006)

Diabetes • End Stage Renal Disease (ERSD) Network #15 2009 Annual Report • 89 new cases of end-stage renal disease in 2009 • 37 (41.6%) of these cases directly linked to diabetes • As of 2009 there were a total of 239 Wyoming citizens on dialysis because of end stage renal disease • 102 (42.7%) due directly to diabetes
