History Of Northern Areas NA’S had a long and turbulent history despite the remoteness of the regions ,the people of the NA’S have never been completely isolated from the events taking place in Central Asia, India, Persia or china. PRE-HISTORY the earliest people of NA’S can be traced back to approximately the 5 millennium B.C it is believed they practiced a religion based on the worship of mountains

  6. Background of Northern area Location Total area 72496 sq Km. Total forest area is 281600ha. 65000ha is protected forest & 21700ha are Reserve forest. Districts of NA Diamer, Gilgit, Skardu, Ghizar, Astore & Hunza Nagar.

  7. Topography • The NA is dominated by one of the most mountainous ranges on earth which are, • Hindu Kush • Himalaya • karakuram • Transition zone between South and Central Asia • Confluence of 3 mountain ranges (all young between 20-30 m years old

Peaks of NA • In NA 101 Peaks are found 7000m above the sea level • Highest concentration of mountains over 20000 ft (6000m) in the world • Most famous are: • K2 (8611m) highest peak in Pakistan • Nanga Parbat (8138m) 2nd highest • Gasherbrum 1G to 5G (8080m) 3rd highest • Rakaposhi (7788m) 12th highest with highest rise in the world (6000m in 6 km)

Glaciers of NA’S • Highest concentration of glaciers outside the poles (22000 Sq Km) known as • The Third Pole • 28% of total are is glaciated (17% in Alps), over 5100 glaciers. • More than 100 glaciers over 10Km in length, any over 50km. Famous glaciers are • Biafo • Baltoro • Hiper • Raikot • Siachen (72 km long)

  10. Fresh Water sources • In NA there are numbers of lakes (119) and wetlands • Famous rivers are • Gilgit river • Hunza river • Ghizer river • Skaradu river
